The fact that mc lets it there to rot instead of moving it to one of their active lines may be kind of telling?
Afaik it’s lived there a long time. The Millis line is isolated from the rest of the former Bay Colony network, meaning that any motive power getting on and off the branch would need to move across another railroad. I believe BCLR simply kept 1701 on the branch, to avoid having to move locomotives between isolated portions of the railroad.
Why Mass Coastal hasn’t bothered to move it since they took over in 2023, idk. Perhaps something about its condition prohibits its movement (either altogether, or just over other railroads).
Whatever Mass Coastal’s plans (or lack thereof) are for it, it doesn’t seem like they’ve made any statements about it. I can’t find any info on the web to suggest that it is either up for sale or planned to be scrapped. It doesn’t appear to be a priority for them, given the lack of activity surrounding it.

That’s what I was thinking. For a dead locomotive to just be abandoned outside and even be isolated from the rest of the line suggests its too much work for the railroad to even move it to a shop for parting out or something. My guess? Probably rusted out trucks or drivetrain.
Why not shop where the ‘big boys’ go? Larry’s Truck & Electric has been selling and leasing used, usually rebuilt or recently out of service (get familiar with your FRA blue card) locomotives and parts.
They would have everything you need to get your locomotive fleet up and running. They may even take PayPal!
This is about a tenth of their inventory. They have three locations near me.
