I have a B&O Box Car with Steam Rail Sounds # 6-16639. that would quit working now and then but it would come back on after it sat or I changed directions. Last night it quit and will not do anything now.
Who works on these?? Are they worth the labor to repair? [*-)]
Hi Kev, never heard of that problem with Lionel’s RS boxcars, either they work or they don’t, no in between. Sounds like something is interupting the power like maybe a loose wire connection.
Bill, Here is a strange one if I place it on my bench test track using a 1063 transformer when I turn up the power the bell will sound. This will not happen on the main track with ZW power. If I turn up the volume on the car it makes a grunting / garble noise.[*-)]
fifedog, yep I did that [Y]
GRJohn, yep I did that too. Wow a lot of wires in that thing. I am thinking a board is bad or something. [^o)]
Kev your post war ZW will not opperate most electronic whistles and bells something about its a different type of out put from the newer transformers and the older ones. yes your 1063 is an older transformer as some will work some won’t also if you have a cw-80 I bet you get the whistle and the bell
by the way switch the wires around on the 1063 and whistle should work instead
Bill please read the text in my post message. [8-|]
"Here is a strange one, if I place it on my bench test track using a 1063 transformer
when I turn up the power the bell will sound. I did not say push the whistle button.
All though today now nothing happens when I turn up the power with it on the test track. The wires are fine on the test transformer all other bells and whistles work, as they should. I did hook the CW-80 to the test track and results are the same.
The ZW has been upgraded with the installation of 2 diodes and it will operate most electronic whistles and bells.
It works all of my old and new horn and whistles just fine with the bell using the sound activation button.
There are 2 boards in that car; one is an amplifier, and the other board produces the sound.
Check for no broken wires anywhere. Turn up the volume and listen close to the speaker for any background hiss. That should confirm power and amplifier board. If no Railsounds, then the main board is bad. No hiss or sound could be either the amplifier or the main board, if the design of the main board supplies power to the amp also.
Kev I don’t have the web page at the moment but contact boxcar bill he sells parts and usually less than most places but there are some which might beet or match him I do know its Lionel parts and he blows Lionel price away
From now on, try Brasseur’s (Saginaw, MI) for your parts needs.
But until then, *tellyawhatimagonnado…*I’m concerned about your cerebral health, dealing with these mal-acting trains. You should probably send them to cousin Fife, as they are probably filled with evil spirits that need to be exercised.
