Building a wye help?

I need to build a wye for my layout. I’m using a #4 Wye handbuilt, so would I need some #6 turnouts to allow it to function? I have tried some #4s to go with it and they were too tight and too far away from the turnout to work. Any suggestions?

Speaking from memory, but I believe a #3 wye.

Rich

My understanding is that a #4 Wye is equivalent to a #8 turnout

Incredible! My memory served me correctly. A #3 wye with a #6 turnout.
Thanks, CNR378.

Not really understanding your question. a “WYE” can be built in lots of different actual shapes with various sized turnouts.

How about a sketch of what you need to to do.

I believe that he wants to feed a pair of turnout ladders off a wye, but I may be mistaken.

Ive tried using 4 turnouts with a 4 wye, but i cant get a wye to form, both legs of said wye seem to be too tight

If you have the space, try extending the wye by running a section of straight track off each leg of the wye before installing the turnouts.

Rich

Again, without a drawing or picture I don’t understand what you are trying to do?

what size space do you have for the wye?

Less than 36" deep and well over 6ft wide.
Its going to only be used by MP15, with MAYBE a GP40 at the absolute most.

Here’s helpful info from another thread…

A number 4 wye turnout is half of a straight #8 turnout, so you would need #8 turnouts to complete the wye.

Or you can use 3 number 4 wye turnouts and make an equilateral wye.

If you have access to any of the Atlas track planning books, they usually have different wye configurations in the back.

I remembered a photo posted on Trainorders.com in April 2016 (the thread address). Three #3 wyes and two #4 turnouts make a 6-track yard. The poster said “50’s have no problem. I use short shank Kadees and coupled 50’s, 40’ to 50’, 40’-40’ all work fine.” I hope this helps you.

I think that this is what he is trying to do. Maybe yes, maybe no.

another approach using the corner
#6 swiches, 28" radius curves

Hello All,

On my 4’x8’ pike, I have a Wye with HO code 100 track.

It consists of a single Atlas Mark IV Code 100 Wye Turnout (superseded by the Mark V) with two sections of Atlas 15-inch radius snap track for each leg and PECO Code 100 ST-240 & ST-241; #2 turnouts.

The wye is powered by an NCE AR10 Auto Reverser with built-in circuit breaker protection.

In your situation have you considered flex track for the legs of the wye?

Hope this helps.

The last few posts have definitely helped me figure out what i need, to build this

Im definitely going to use flex track as well as perhaps build it with 3 Wyes

What im planning. The largest thing to use it will be a GP fpur axle locomotive

The one switch “hanging out” isnt in a permanent spot yet
