How many Alco C630s are left? ( no montreals please)
There are three known surviving Schenectady-built Alco C630’s, out of 77 built.
All 3 are preserved.

Scot,
I believe there is one more, also owned by the Arkansas RR Museum, at least according to The Diesel Shop, http://www.thedieselshop.us/PRSVDalcoCC.HTML.
I think it is one and the same unit. The unit at the Arkansas Railroad Museum is owned by Ed Bowers or his company Vintage Locomotives Incorporated, VLIX. The unit has an interesting history and a number of owners before arriving in Pine Bluff.
Thanks, SSW, I was wondering about that.
Ok, there are only THREE C630s left. The Ar. Railroad muesum C630 is one of the ones I mentioned in the original post, Its UP 2907, then DMIR, Cartier33, now back to UP. also is ATsf RSD15 843 and a SP RSD12 next to the 2907, the ONLY place in the world where you can see 3 alcos side by side. the museum is also going to get an RS32, the last RS3 unaltered by a Chevy engine. Its now in houston, and I think an RS1 will come along later. an FPA-1 is on the way too. also there at the museum is the first U23C, LS&I 2300. 819 is still there, along with the 336. I think that they may get a DD40X and an UP E9-intact!, because there used to be a ex-CNW, ex-Metra E8 that was burned out and the paneling all rusted out-but it got sold. But for the DD40, it will be most likely the South Dakota one ( search-"south dakota DD40x or something like that)
Who knows how many M630s are left? I lost count, because for an odd reason, it seems all these Canadian units have been saved.
I’m sure that there has to be more(?) but The Diesel Shop only has one listed, CP 4563 preserved at the Canadian Railway Museum.
CP 4563 is a Canadian built MLW M630.
and why are you sure there has to be more?
there really doesnt have to be more…because there really arent more.
Scot
Scot, it was just a hunch, my friend, thanks for the help. [;)]
Minnesota Commercial is still using some of the Canadian versions everyday, if you wanted to see one ‘in service’. It’s still basically the same engine afterall.
some railroad on former erie has some those. i’ve seen the successor, the HR616, by Bombardier, real cool, especially when see those Alco trucks. but I see Alcos every day.
oh oops, I meant the Little rock & western![soapbox][:(!][banghead][tdn][censored]
There may be a couple of the C&O’s C630s still working in Australia, but it’s unlikely that they’d be recognizable any more.
I saw the South Dakota one, last weekend. It’s sitting on the Dakota Southern tracks, at Chamberlain, S.D. The unit is in UP paint, and is i pretty tough shape. The apint is peeling, and some panels are missing along the top of the hood. The paint is peeling as well. It looks like it hasn’t moved in a while.
Interesting. How did they arrive in Australia? [?]
Take note how each of the C630s that are preserved have different sets of six-axle trucks. The ex-N & W locomotive rides on a pair of former FM Trainmaster trucks. The former UP C630 has a pair of tri-mount trucks, and the ex-RDG unit has a pair of Alco’s Hi-ad trucks.
UP 2907 has the honor of being both the last UP C630 and the last one of it’s configuration. By the way, the SD DD40X in fact hasn’t moved for several years. But I hope ARM picks it beacuse it’s in the worst shape of all of them. For all I know, it’s going to get scrapped if nobody buys it. (yes, it is for sale, that’s what I’ve been told.[#ditto] but I ought to rename this forum “DD40Xs and C630s”(What…I can’t do that… I think)[#offtopic]Nah, who cares? I don’t.
i also might mention that The Diesel Shop lists 2907 twice, the first confusing it for what they thought was an A&M unit. In fact, the A&M has a 628 or M630.
There are no C628’s in the USA…only Mexico and Australia. (and they are in museums, not operating)
One in Mexico is ex-D&H…the only surviving C628 originally belonging to an American railroad.
Scot
Wait, someone go check their roster books(for the present) I think the A&M unit is a 628
