Canadian Pacific Kansas City - The 7th Class I Railroad

You’re right. I did miss that. Thanks for posting. Fascinating story!

Seriously? Do you really think that could actually happen? Would the STB allow it?

With Billionaires playing Billionaire Games - many things I previously thought were impossible are happening in real time these days.

Of course not.

I read a great article a couple of years ago about how CP is nibbling away at parts of UPs operation a little bit at a time. Never say never.

Someone with time on their hands may be able to see what assets have changed hands over the last several years.

IDK trial balloons are starting to float around, primarily by Jim Vena at Union Pacific and some industry analysts. The theme is growth or merger.

With so few players left something akin to the Congress of Vienna would need to be setup to decide who would merge with whom. That would almost certainly violate current antitrust laws, although there is the precedent of NS and CSX negotiating how to divide up Conrail.

There’s lots of ex-Canadian execs running US RRs nowadays. So who knows anymore.

Wasn’t Gunn at Amtrak Canadian? They gave him the boot in 2005! (Unfairly, in my opinion then and now.)

Remember from the threads we had on the CN merger attempt (which richhotrain obviously did not read) – the STB did not allow that merger, which was up to that point essentially a ‘done deal’, PRECISELY because it would tend to limit competition.

Yep, and I know one of the Vice Presidents of one who migrated. He will tell ya the times they are a changin.

Is that parenthetical really necessary, Woke?

Rich

I’m simply referring to what you said.

No, I think you are still bothered by the 7th Class I issue.

Rich

I got over that as soon as you demonstrated you didn’t read the STB’s page.

Can we drop that?

My money is still on UP/CSX and BNSF/NS to give us 4 class 1 trans cons: 2 in the USA and 2 in Canada.

Amtrak/VIA???

Yes – tell him to stop bringing it up.

Really?

Here is one of the Trains forum threads, from 2021 when the CN offer looked like a ‘done deal’. This came up using the little ‘magnifying glass’ search tool (using CN KCS merger as the search terms). There were others.

Are we proposing a radical upset at the STB, and an equally radical upset in Congress to eliminate protections of the Sherman and Clayton acts on the already-overmerged North American Class Is?

An executive order will be signed to make it happen. UP gets CPKC and BNSF gets CN right after Canada becomes the 51st state. <"/"jocularity>
