Partly cloudy and above freezing but the weather is still good for submillimeter astronomy. The weather next week sounds interesting. The weather service is potentially comparing it to the '93 floods. Thanks for the updates Don and keep 'em coming. You generally see what we get first. You are officially part of the weather monitoring service of the Submillimeter Telescope.
NavyJack - Welcome! I spent some time in the Seabees a while back. I got up to BU3 before I got out. NMCB-17 out of Port Hueneme (who-needs-me), CA. My stint was in the reserves, but we got close to the fist “sandbox” experience. This is a great bunch. They helped me thru some tough times this summer. And the submarine car was my first piece of rolling stock.
Brutus - hope all is going well
Waiting for a phone call from my realtor. There is a possibility that I could buy the house I am renting. Was a little surprised to hear the numbers the owners were talking about. We’ll see what numbers the realtor comes up with, but I’m not too hopeful. Even this 850 sq. ft. house is out of my price range.
Better news is that a guy on my corvair van forum just replaced his 4 -spd w/ a power glide. He is willing to sell it and in Tucson! The 3-spd, which needs new seals anyways, will get an upgrade!
Home again home again, jiggedy jog… A pretty good day for me and a nice easy 90 mile drive home after listening to some of the greatest kids in the world, I do enjoy my “part time” job but there are times (not today) that I keep asking myself “why”? I think I’m about done, time to let the pups step up to the plate and pay their dues–this is my 43rd year–maybe time to slow down.
Navy Jack, WELCOME, good to have you here. There is a wealth of information on this forum that is easily accessible. There’s one particular character here named “Chief” … an awfully nice guy deep down but there’s a tremendous amount of HOT AIR to get past to the goodness of his heart. It’s OK, just be patient with him and it will all work out.
Had a great evening out with friends. One of my best friends, his wife and I all have birthdays within a day of each other. Even though they are 90 miles away, we take time every year to get together for dinner and celebrate. He was one of the ushers in my wedding and is a super person. Was a Lt. in charge of a recon platoon in Vietnam. One day, while helping with some reloading, he opened a drawer loaded with all kinds of medals. I asked him why he doesn’t have them displayed and his answer…“What I am most proud of is that when I had my guys out in the field, not one of them was killed. After that, the medals are secondary”.
NavyJack, welcome to the CTT forum and the “Pot”. Great group of guys here. We have a lot of fun and share our concerns/lives with each other…and some train stuff too. Always good to have more service folks here.
NavyJack [welcome] to ‘The Pot’. As I’ve tried to tell all those that came after me and preceeded you… DO NOT PULL FIFE’s FINGER! But no one listens…
Went to see ‘The Blindside’ with The Q today. Great movie. If you haven’t seen it, go.
Received a box with a couple CPT cars. Now just have to take some pics and get them on their way to John. Hope to have the pics done tomorrow and the items in the mail on Monday.
Brutus - prayers are out for your wife, you, and your family.
Lazy day …sons came by … pulled out a Cab Forward … lubed her … ran her … heading for the Tardis … shopping for my first in years diesel engine … feel like a traitor to the steamers …
chatted with Brutus on the tardis this morning for a good while …
NAVYJACK … an old Navy sailor here too … had the old button blues … girls loved them … used to have the nickname = POPEYE … but never got the tatoo … lol
Welcome NavyJack. [#welcome] Underworld is a “strange” sounding name but he really is a great guy. Then you have Dennis W and Pat L. Great Southern Gentlemen. RT is a Carpetbagger hanging out in the South. Now you have good Yankees [if there could be any good in a Yankee] and you have bad Yankees. Jack, Fife, Doug M, John F, Brent L, Brutus, Banks, Wes, Kurt, Charlie and a few others are OK. Now for the scalawags. Sir J, Chuck M, LAZ and Mike C [don’t like grits]. For the unforgiven. Buckeye and Jon [over the hill horn blower]. Then the guys more west. Bob, Ray [SP] and Doug W. Then you have the down right mean, Don Baker [know as Shake and Bake = earth quakes and fires]. Now as for me, I’m the very nice Southern Polite Gentleman who loves grits and sweet ice tea. [now you see we kid a lot and poke fun at each other but all love each other. we get serious and honor prayer requests.]
Back from taking my niece [Pam’s youngest Sister’s daughter] out to Texas Steakhouse for her 16th birthday. She is getting a car. Pam said to me, well she is 16. I then asked if that ment an automatic vehicle for her gift. I was told, “Yes.” Times have changed.
Got one engine charging as not been run in a year. Cut shelves for walk through closet to put engines in there. Christmas tubs under layout and tree in attic. Attic also has about 5 Santas and one Angel.
Picked up some videos at Target on sale. Vietnam War, Great Indian Wars and Great Campaigns of WWII.
hello friend, i live in poplar grove, illinois which is very rural. i am not from the south, but do not know really where i am from as i have been all over. i know one thing though, my wife loves the grace of the south, and i like the good manners and values. if we could afford it we would live in charleston, but we ended up in this very low cost of living area as we had to take care of my dad when i retired. your friend jack
Beautiful day here in PA got to 52!!! Went to CABELAS with WIFE and bought .308 bullets @ 28 bucks for 50 rounds not bad, so got a box for me and one for BRO. Then went to TRAIN NERD PARTY, ate great had a few land sharks and talked trains for 3 hrs. NO PILE UPs!!! Just TALK GUYZ JUST TALK!!!
[#welcome]NAVYJACK and a BIG SALUTE to you for serving our country!!!
Had a good night on the tardis with Brutus - SJ - and RT … Char’s started her chemo today GOD bless her … will be putting in an extra special prayer for her tonight when I lay down … as LAZ said and we are also expecting freezing rain/black ice … hope folks don’t lose their power … it’s too darn cold . Gonna hit the World at War on the 360 and let those kids thump me some more … lol . They flip when I tell them they’re playing an old 62 year old grand-pappy . [:D] They just yell
" come on pap join our team " for some reason they treat me very nice … there’s more good/nice kids out there than one thinks . Alot of them say they wish their dads and grandads would play … lol .
Thaks for all the prayers and good wishes here and elsewhere too. I sure appreciate it. Had some intestinal problems this morning - hospital food? Probably stress and sitting all day yesterday in bad chairs.
Got an AT&T usbconnect thingie for my wife’s netbook. Ran some other errands for her and visited with her for a couple hours at the hospital. She finished one bag of her chemo drugs and started another as I was leaving. No touching, kissing or contact already, but I think right now it is because she is on these high dose drugs - I don’t think they have knocked her immunity down yet, as hospital staff said she could have outside food today. All she wanted was double chocolate chocolate chip cookies.
The computer card works, but you are limited to 5GB per month. So, no streaming online videos etc - we did do videochat tonight with her and me and the kids and it worked better than I expected considering she is essentially on a dialup. Used about 20 MB so far today. I expect that she will not exceed her 5GB limit. The bad news is that I had to get a 2 year contract on this thing - ug. I think I can buy out of it once she is home, not sure. Might be cheaper to do that than pay $50 a month for another 24 months (22 or so by then?).
The only trains today was that I picked up a newer issue of OGR at the store while getting her cookies. I haven’t even looked inside. I did read the last two CTTs and Trains magazines yesterday at the hospital.
Come get me in the TARDIS guys and we can let SJ drive tonight - I got some good sleep last night and feel a lot better [(-D]
Welcome Navy Jack ! It seems you are already be hit with a lot of indoctrination! Definitely biased and untruthful !
I think someone needs to cook up a new bag of Grits. Chief Eagles has a habit of cooking them once, and then leave them set around for awhile and keeps snacking on them. Of course they dry up, turn hard begin to grow stuff, but he keeps eating on them. Then he begins these halucinations and says all these crazy things.
"
That is sooo far from the truth ! Just today I have received the honor from “submmbob” (previous page, he is a well known Geologist and Scientist) Thanks for the updates Don and keep 'em coming. You generally see what we get first. You are officially part of the weather monitoring service of the Submillimeter Telescope.
In addition to that compliment, you will also notice from my signature below, I have also received the Dubious Honor of Membership in OTTS, this highly prized distinction was awarded to me by Buckeye, Chuck, Laz and others. Again another testament, (and I will state probably a situation of jealousy from the Chief.)
Yet, another honor is the naming of the Airfield located at Doug Murphys layout, “Baker Field” this to was bestowed upon me from yet another great and well respected forum member.
So with all that you certainly can see where everything you hear is certainly not true. And besides all that, with out a doubt I am the nicest guy I know.
Good evening all, I have been trying to catch up on the forum. Thought I was just one day behind but a lot has been posted since I looked last time.
NavyJack, Welcome aboard! I was not in the navy but grew up in a Navy town. Norfolk/Portsmouth area of Virginia. I don’t have to tell you what the Navy used to call Norfolk. I hope it is better now. I moved away from there in 1958 and have been on the West Coast since. One of my two sons did serve in the Navy Reserve and was called up for the first gulf war. He was flown from here to join his ship, Tarawa, which was already in the gulf at the time. Some of my sisters married navy guys, Coast Guardsmen and Marines. I think we have had everything in our family except someone from the Army.
My biggest concern lately, like Don mentioned is the predicted rain we are suppose to get next week. I live in a foothill town and they are predicting the heaviest rains in my area. I spent the day today sandbagging the front of my garage/train room door in case the water tries to get in there. I have a new sump pump installed and ready behind the garage to pump water out of a low spot where it accumulates. I also set up another submersible pump in a little dressing area between the pool and garage which I can turn on when needed to pump water out of there. The water level in the pool is already below normal and I’m leaving it that way for now. I have siphon hose at the ready near the pool to take more water out when necessary. My biggest fear is that if we have a power failure while the rain is backing up, my pumps will stop. That is why I sandbagged the garage door just in case.
Brutus, glad things are going well so far for your Mrs.
Pat, I think you and I came on board about the same time but I will never catch the chief either.
A quiet night tonight. Weather is still fairly good.
Don - thanks again for the weather report. And this is a submillimeter telescope:
10 meters of pure high frequency radio fun. We work anywhere from 200 - 700 GHz in the high radio frequency range looking for various molecules in our solar system, the local galaxy, and out to the edge of the known universe. Given the high frequency this is the most accurate radio dish built to date. Average error across the 10 meter surface is 15 microns. It has to live in a building because of this and your weather reports help in keeping it out of the weather and thus preserving the surface and the accuracy. Years ago I used to talk to our 12 meter scope on Kitt Peak about the coming weather. But being lower frequency, if they were even open they considered the weather great. We have access to NWS reports and satellite views, but I listen to all the weather info I can find.
Found out that MTH makes a 6YB that can run on 42" curves. This could be trouble. Did a redesign of the first 4X8[:D]
Brutus…Prayers for your wife and wishing her a fast and speedy recovery.
PapaDiesel…Congratulations!!!
Chuck…Run Forrest, Run!!!
Laz…Many of us would like to be invited to the second train nerd party.
Don…A little rain won’t hurt you. You moved there from the land of milk and honey, so suck it up. Jon or I could send you some snow in a cooler, C.O.D.
Doug…Chicago has hands down the best collection of museums that I have ever seen in one place.
Iowa Jonny…Please send me money to get me back home. Yesterday I ventured out and walked along the beach and saw scantily clad women on the white sand with a clear blue sky, a blazing sun and a gentle breeze. I just can’t take in anymore. I beg you!!! (BTW, I did get a BUBBA GUMP shirt to wear while fishing.)
Mornin’ boys. Had to slip on my hip-waders before coming to the Coffee Pot this AM [:-^]. Chance of rain and 38 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. Living room all painted, now need to get crackin’ on the trim. Took a breather yesterday, and the boy and I had a table at a local antique/toy show. An adjoining vendor gave me a nice compliment, saying that Chris really handles himself well with customers.
Welllllll, that other ravens team showed up last night. Too many dropped passes, too many untimely penalties, two many fumbles ended the season of inconsistency. That leaves us 28 dats 'til DAYTONA! Speaking of 28, read a good interview with Robert Yates this morning.
submmbob - Cool pic. With some spare STAR WARS models, could probably kitbash a neet little scene like that on a mountain side.
Jim F – I will have you wife in my mind during the intentions during services today.
Yesterday was busy. Had an Eye Drs appointment, and will need new glasses. Eyes actually getting better, at a distance. Doc said happens as you get older. Then went to with the truck Cincinnati with grandson to get youngest daughter and new bed. All worked out well. As we were carrying out the old set one of her neighbors wanted it so I did not have to bring it home.
