Dean Freytag -1924-2010

I am posting this because I’ve not seen it on the MR community. Dean Freytag - a frequent contributor to Model Railroader Magazine and pioneer steel industry modeler and contributor has passed away.

His modeling skills were amazing, and were an inspiration to me and many others that model the steel industry. He will be missed.

That is so sad. I agree, Dean was an excellent modeler and left a terrific legacy. The model railroading community has definitely lost a great one.

Do you know any other details? Or even what day it was he died?

John

My condolences go out to his family and many friends. I will keep him in my prayers. He will be missed.

This was posted on one of the MMR lists. I am proud to say that I knew him and his wife, after meeting him thru the NMRA contests. I will have his memory as friend and mentor since then. He will be sorely missed.

"Received news today that Dean Freytag passed away Christmas night. Felt that this should be shared as some of you might have known Dean.

Sincerely, Mark Morgan

Flags are flying at half staff today over model railroads throughout Ohio and beyond, mourning the passing of model railroad legend Dean Freytag.

Freytag, 86, passed away Christmas night at the assisted living facility in Ashland, OH, where he had resided for the past 11 months. He leaves a sister Carol, a brother-in-law Jim, and a niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by wife Ann Elizabeth (Davies)

I am sorry to read off his passing. I want to build steel mill railroad someday because I was inspired by his railraod.

That is so sad to hear. My condolences and prayers go out to his family.

Sometimes the measure of a man’s life are the memories he leaves behind for those who will walk this earth for a little while longer. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mister Freytag but I do know this: this hobby has been greatly enriched by the many contributions he has made to it.

That is sad and a shame to hear. I hope his last moments were as peaceful as he could achieve. we modellers lost a lot, and are fotunate we have as much as we do of his legacy behind. My condolances to his family, and my congrats to his getting the opportunity to rejoin his wife.

I remember his two-part story on modeling a small steel foundry ("Freytag’s Foundry) a few years back. I plan to build that small foundry some day when I’m in a house and have a basement to fill.

I feel very lucky to have visited Dean’s layout and met him in person. I really didn’t know him that well, but Dean has been a visitor in my home over the years through several magazine articles, videos, and books that it feels as if I’ve known him for years.

My condolences to his family, friends, and the millions of model railroaders that lost a mentor and a fr

Dean’s book was very helpful to me as I modeled my steel mill.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Thanks Dean for allowing me to visit, for signing your books, and for the recent invitation to come and see you. I’m sorry I didn’t. But I will always remember being at your home and rerailing a caboose, you just winked and said thank you. There is more to the story, but not now. You will be missed Steve

This comes as quite a shock!!. To saw that Dean Freytag was a legend in our hobby is an understatement. He will be missed by one and all.

I was just studying both his books as I plan out my Steel Mill. I had already planned on using the “Davies” name in his honor. Such sad news and on Christmas day , no less.

His insurmountable gift of resources to the hobby could never be quantified, so lets just call it endless and timeless. May he rest in peace and live forever in our Mills and industries.

A very sad day for model railroading. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but read some of his articles and viewed his layout many times via the Allen Keller video. My condolences to his family and friends a little piece of him will live on in all of us who model steel mills.

I too was saddened to hear this. Dean was a great modeler, and another credit to our modeling community.

I found this page with some good photos of his work.
