Did any roads have a SD40-2"B' unit??

Did any roads have this engine? I thought I saw one before be can’t remember. I think it might have been UNION PACIFIC or NORFOLK SOUTHERN.

Mike

Yes. BN (and thus BNSF) had some. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?mid=194

From the looks of it, some roads shown on the site remove the controls and plated over the cabs, creating home made SD40-2B’s.

Incidentally, Santa Fe ordered some GP60B’s during the 90’s. http://leekee89.com/ATSF/EMDORIG/GP60B/330.HTM

THANKS

Now the proud owner is the CPR…we get all the good stuff.

The BN “B” units referenced were produced from wrecked units. Each on the BN units is slightly different as a result. EMD did not produce any as factory built units.

As many said, BN had a few. One from BN made it over to the SOO.

Also, ATSF had a few SD45Bs and SD45-2Bs.

SD45B

Union Pacific did actually order SD40-2B’s from EMD but cancelled the order. Missouri Pacific ran several SD40’s as B units while awaiting parts to repair wreck-damaged cabs.

Several ex-MP SD40-2’s were even lettered UPB, the B was in front of the number on the cab.

Haha, when I first clicked on that picture of the A-B-B-A SD45 set, I thought it was a model for a minute. I’ve never seen SD45s that clean before.

Cheers!

The February 1996 Issiue of Model Railroader has an article on how to build a BN SD40-2 B.

I made my version of SOO 6450:

I liked this one because it was different than the other B units made from wrecks, they mostly just had the cab removed and plated over. SOO 6450 had its dynamic brakes relocated (or newly installed) where the cab used to be.

I had an article on making my model in the October “Model Railroading” magazine. It included prototype photos and a drawing by friend Patrick Lawson.

The article was in the Oct/Nov 1999 issue of Model Railroading, which is still available.

Oops! Left out the year! And I had the article right in front of me!
