DL&W had a pair of dual powered (catenary & battery) locomotives used for switching and some local freight. Obviously they could not stray far from the wire.
These two battery-electric locomotives lasted through WWII.
Actually, they were tri-powers (diesel, battery, electric) and were similar to those on NYC except that they had a pantograph for electric pick-up instead of third-rail shoes.
Similarly, IC had four straight electric steeple cabs that performed yard work under catenary north of Roosevelt Rd. They were sold to South Shore Line (900-903) in 1941.
