i was informed that DRGW 5371 is due for its tri annual inspection this year. and Roper, the place that “loses” any patch kits sent to them meant for patching 5371, will not be performing this inspection. therefore 5371 will be sent to a different shop. orders in the computer are to patch it. is this really the end for the last of the Rio Grande? anyone know anything about this?
Lets hope not! That would rid of the DRGW locomotives. Next thing you know, there goes the CNW and SP!
CNW has it different. like Roper, Proviso “loses” patch kits too. the difference is that Proviso has an additional shop called M19A that can handle very heavy assignments. proviso probably can do 3 year assignments. so when the duo needs their inspections, proviso will take care of that and “lose” the patch kits if they’re sent to them. surely SP has a “protector” yard too
I doubt SP does. The terminal that comes to mind is Roseville. Unfortunately, they seem to not care. They patched almost all of the SP, SSW, and DRGW locomotives operating out of there back in 2001. A couple of years ago, one would rarely see an unpatched SP locomotive in Northern California and could go down to West Colton and see many. Now West Colton as patched almost all of them down there.
at least SP has an SD45 at a museum. so the bloody nose will be here to stay!
but what of 5371? is there any hope that it will go unscathed? maybe if it went to proviso. all their work with CNW might have them sympathize for DRGW
What museum is that SD45 at?
It seems like it is in Utah. It seems like the California State Railroad Museum has a SP SD45T-2, although I am not sure if it is on display yet.
i dont think it is but when its out i have to see it!!!
amen to that. isnt there anything DRGW preserved at a museum? it seems like the 2 RRs that lack locomotives on display are DRGW and MoPac
I would hate to see it happen, but if it does not happen now, it’s day is still coming.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I think theres a GP30 somewhere.
blugh… always a GP30. i never much cared for those. that’s the only WC power on display as well.
what about steam? is there any DRGW steam preserved?
I know this asking the impossible but this thread got me thinking. After UP patches the second to last CNW unit it would be nice if they could donate the final unit to teh Illinois Rail Museum. The last “Illinois Railroad” locomotive, ya know.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is a “patch kit”?
Not entirely unlike model RR decals, it is a block of solid color to cover up the old number, and the UP number gets applied over the top of it. Several UP heralds are usually also included.
if the duo ever gets patched. my thinking is they’ll both be patched at the same time. i’d much rather see an SD60, SD50, or SD40-2 at IRM
Oh there’s plenty of it in Chama, NM and Durango, CO! There’s more at the CRRM in Golden, though it’s not quite the same experience. Additionally, there’s a couple on static display around CO. Finally, I think Knott’s Berry Farm has a couple, including one of the 2 K-27’s left (463 is at the C&TS). I always loved the mudhens more than any other Mike’s. I hope 463 is brought back to life one of these days.
EDIT: Knott’s Berry Farm has a C-19 Consolidation. Their K-27 (464) went to the Huckleberry Railroad in Flint, MI. At least, thats what www.steamlocomotive.com has to say!
quite a bit of steam. the best of DRGW is still around, just not in service, it seems. just like the CNW steamer being preserved.
i’m really hoping 5371 somehow survives
Well its a 50/50 chance hopefully they do a check and send it on its way. I am sure that others and I want to see 1989 and 5371 travel the track to place to place at one point. The other side I am sure we can get lots of pictures of it patched since UP likes the patched paint with locos being patched from years back and still haven’t been painted today. Another bad thing is my DRG&W drought will continue I hope to see one in DRG&W paint or 5371 since the one I saw in 1998.
