Exciting Steam & Diesel Videos

There are many videos available for both steam and diesel on the NSW railroad. This is by far the most spectacular work I have ever seen. Here is one example:

Thanks for sharing the video, love those Beyer-Garrets!

Amazed at the number of trains operating with the engines running backward.

Yes, thanks

Yes, there were a lot of back up operations but don’t mistake the Beyer-Garrets’ separate engine which was drivers, cylinders, and pistons on a ballasted frame completely on its own rather than under the boiler…it appears the engines, when coupled in tandem, are running backwards but in reality aren’t.

I believe the Garratts are bidirectional. The advantage of the Garratt design is that all weight is on the drivers. I was never too sure if I liked the Garratts because they are so different looking. But when I see them in action, their basic steam personality comes through, and they are as wondrous as any railroad action. Here is a great sequence of the Garratts in action:

This New South Wales RR seems to be an extraordinarily interesting and photogenic operation, and unusually well covered by expert video production.

This is an amazing re-start after stalling. Notice the wheel slip at 2:20.

Another amazing stall with older EMDs:

I like the smoke and noise of this earlier power. Great sound quality here. Excellent technical quality:

This reminds me of the C&NW in the 1970s:
