Gravel in N Scale

Hello all,

Looking for advice on modeling gravel in N scale. I’m building the Walton & Sons Lumber Co. kit from Walthers (here), and I like the idea of giving the whole lumber yard a gravel base. I’m using Woodland Scenics fine ballast for my track, and I’m guessing the bits of gravel should be even smaller than the bits of that fine ballast in order to be accurate. What materials do you use to model gravel in N Scale? Would painted Sculptamold or WS Mold-a-Scene plaster work?

I’d try fine sand or sanded grout. That should give a fair approximation of gravel for modelling purposes.

Sounds good, glued down, maybe if can be sealed with some clear dull finish. - Puma

There are some textured paints from Rust-o-lem and Krylon that should work nicely.

Real sand, sifted through a very fine strainer, then sprinkled on wet paint should also work. I have done this in HO, looks good. I have heard that a piece of nylon stocking allows only very fine materials through. I have also sprinkled hydraulic cement on wet paint successfully. Should be similar to using tile grout or similar dry products.

Good luck,

Richard

Must be my eyes, but I use Woodland Scenics fine ballast,Buff colored, once you put on the adhesive mixture and let dry,it looks like the real thing to me…I use it on roads and the whole area around a grain elevator…with some weeds, here and there…Have fun!!

Cheers,

Frank

My thoughts for scale size gravel I would look into Z Scale ballast.

Perhaps making a mixture of different colors of fine grey ballast. Throw in a pinch or two of brown colors. Might do the trick.

Happy modeling!

Don.
