When I used to model HO (before bi-focals), I built my own track. I purchased ties and rail, code 83, and actually, with gauges, laid the track. I also built my own switches.
Has anyone seen three rail O Gauge track built in this manner?

I don’t think they did any three rail, but the New York Society of Model Engineers did a entire layout with hand laid track. Was most impressive. I think their web site has some information on the construction. I have seen the layout a number of times growning up, but not in about 15 years. There was a article written not too long ago on the club. When they did the layout, it was actually modelled after the North Jersey area. The club is located in Carlstadt, NJ. If you ever get up there when they are having an open house, it is something to take in.

I went to the web site and looked up the WSJ article that was written this past November. A few things I was not aware of: They have 20 scale miles of O gauge track, handlaid. The majority of the locomotives are scratch built! That in and of itself is amazing. Someday, I’d like to have the patience and the skill to be able to do. As I said above, really worth taking in.

There was forum member a few years back that laid his own track. If he’s lurking out there maybe he’ll comment.
Roger, are you thinking of David Vergun? The link I posted above is to one of his topics.
What ever happened to FJ&G, anyhow? That guy could make anything!

The New York Society’s O scale layout previous to the one in Carlstadt was upstairs in the Hoboken NJ Lackawanna RR ferry terminal and, in keeping with the era in which it was constructed, it was outside third-rail.

I remember the Hagerstown Model RR group having hand laid O with outside 3rd Rail. I think the legendary John Armstrong did it that way too. I knew guys who handlaid track got a certain satisfaction (and “therapy”) from it, but too many good commercial choices to choose from today.
Dang you got more patients then I got!!!
You missed the key words “used to”.
