Holy Mackeral-Just reviewing Walthers 2010 catalog (P2K-steam gone!)

They’ve dropped:

2-10-2

2-8-4

0-8-0

0-6-0

The only thing left is the Y3 2-8-8-2 (Did I miss any?)

Is stream selling that badly? While the 2-8-4 was a lightweight, they were all very nice models and runners.

If you want them, grab them while you can!

Don, remember these locos are made in “batches”, now commonly called “limited production runs”.

Walthers has a long history of not including products in the catalog that are not likely to be available during the “Christmas season” of that catalog’s issue. The catalog comes out in fall and is considered “dead” reference by the next summer. So if no new runs of the the locos you mentioned are planned or expected to arrive in the next 3-6 months, then they would commonly be left out of the catalog this year.

Additionally, if most or all of a model is sold out IN THEIR WAREHOUSE, no matter how many are still on dealer or mailorder house shelves, this too will prompt them to temporarily remove the item from the catalog, again, especially if no more are expected to arrive in the next 6 months. This has been the Walthers catalog mode of operation for many decades now.

That all has nothing to do with their long range plans to make additional releases of these locos. Considering the tooling costs, and their success so far, I’m sure we will see future releases of these locos.

In my nearly 40 years in this hobby, and a number of them also working in the hobby business, I have seen this a lot. Because of batch production and limited demand many Athearn items have had dry spells of 2-3 years. And “everyone” said the’re not going to make any more of this or that, but yet they did. Walthers is no different.

Perhaps it was their pricing? Compared to BLI they are very expensive.

Hi Don, It’s hard to tell with no explanation from Walthers, but I have passed on Proto steam due to the price compared with others so that may be part of it.***** I would have liked to have had their 0-8-0 but not at that price. I think the batch explanation is the most likely one overall, though. ***** I have a BLI AC-4 coming today (I hope!) that has already sold out on that batch and BLI isn’t saying when and if they’ll do another. ***** By the way, thanks for the notice on that UP passenger set but after contacting the seller they were 85ft.ers rather than shorties :frowning: I’m after the celestory roofed heavyweight 60’ shorties in Armor Yellow and Grey if they should cross your path and I miss them in my watch lists somehow. ****** P.S. Do you no longer have email? I wasn’t sure how to get back to yours. Cheers and thanks.*********Digital Griffin, this batch thing makes things scarey for knowing when and if we’ll ever be able to get repair parts in the future doesn’t it? I’m taking a leap of faith that the AC-4 will have parts available down the road I guess :frowning:

Jim,

That’s where keeping an eye on eBay came in handy for me. I picked up two NIB, 2nd-run, DC Proto 2000 0-8-0 switchers (NYC and Erie) for $90 and $80, respectively. Even if I add sound, it will still be cheaper than buying the non-sound version at MSRP, which is $250. They are great little switchers; beautiful detailing with just terrific low-speed response to them.

I haven’t seen the new Walthers catalogue, but are they only keeping the Y-3 2-8-8-2, or are they still offering the USRA Rio Grande/NP version, also? That was a VERY pleasant surprise when I picked up my Rio Grande version–a P2k steamer that actually PULLED! And w/o traction tires to boot. Over 25 freight cars up a steady 2% grade without a spin. Didn’t expect that from P2k, believe me!
