How do you pronounce "gondola"?

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=gondola

I see that you may pronounce it either way, with the accent on the first syllable or on the second syllable. Just wondering how everyone else pronounces it. ???

with the emphasis on the first syllable.

gone’-dole-a

That’s the way I say it.

HD

As witih most everything, “it depends”. [:D]

If I’m in Venice, Italy (and not speaking Italian) and referring to the local watercraft, I would accent the first syllable.

On any railroad property or around railroaders (in the Northeast), I’d accent the second syllable. That is, if I used the whole word. I would more likely only say the first syllable and railroaders would know what I’m talking about.

Chuck

In the industry its simply called a gon.

I’m like HoosierDaddy, I put the emphasis on the second sylable. Gone-DOLE-a

On the railroad it is GONE-doh-lah. On the water it is gone-DOH-la.

If you are switching them, then it’s just a Gon. Unless you are a cub, for some reason they want to call them Gongs?!

I’ve always said it GUN - dole - lah. Now the boat is GAHN- dough - lah and GON is well GON.

I have always heard it with the em-PHAS-is on the second sy-LAB-le. Depends on where you live!!!

In the Ozark Mountains, it’s pronounced “gon duh o luh” As in, “Frank, wat’s in dat dere gon duh o luh car over dere?”

In southern Illinois twang, the emphasis was on the second syllable – Gon-DOH-la.

In my basement we say it just like we would say the name of the boat … with the emphasis on the Second Syllable. But if you don’t we wouldn’t hold it against you. [:D]

I 've been saying ‘gone-dul-ah’ for years. I don’t know if its correct though.

Hmmm, next we’ll be discussing tators and tomaters on here! [:D]

That’s taters and maters where I come from… [:p]

The same way you pronounce “cupola”

I saw a cupola deer on the way to work this morning. [;)]

I’m with you Chuck. Add to that Venician watercraft, the thing that hangs from the cable at a ski resort, and takes you up the mountain.

There is hope for this group yet, at least nobody wants the accent on the third syllable.

gon-doh-LA[banghead][D)][(-D][(-D][(-D]

Hey! Better watch which way your wrist flops when you say that, pardner!

LA LA LA LA LA LA!

Darrell, stiff-wristed and quiet…for now

Darrell, Big Girl will vouch for me, it’s NOT all in the wrist.[swg]

Actually, I hadn’t thought of that angle. It was more the disagreement about first or second syllable accent, and that we all agree it isn’t on the third.
