My focus is 100% on O now and will be for quite awhile, but I do have a lot of HO stuff and always figured I will build a HO layout. Actually the framework for it is up. I’m sure quite a bit of O people also have HO or N layouts. There is no question that I prefer reading about O though.
Dennis San Fernando Valley CA. We get Santa Anna wind that makes it warm. It’s been just under 80 for quite awhile now.
I tried posting my Flyer RR Building endeavor to a “Layouts And Layout Building” forum on the MRR site and was first rebuked on that forum, then ignored altogether because it wasn’t HO or N gauge. Their loss…
I posted about my building my small indoor G scale layout in the “Layouts And Layout Building” section, there was some early replies, but then nothing, even thought the scenery technics were straight out of the same book those guys use. I don’t get it, same technics, just bigger trains, so I gave up, its gotten a bit colder over there of late. they seam to have forgotten that despite how elaboratly detailed or how much they cost, they are all TOY trains.
Funny thing is when I was building the G layout, I was referring to this scale for some scenery ideas as well. Some of the best ideas for the G layout came from layouts in CTT, good ideas are good ideas regardless of what scale they came from.
O Gauge has been in our family for two generations, so that’s where my primary interest is. That said, the same great-aunt and uncle, who gave my dad his AF set (which runs on a Christmas tree layout) in the 1930s, also gave me an HO set when I was much younger. I’ll probably build a Christmas tree layout utilizing the HO equipment at some point.
Regarding the MR Forum, I think it’s a great resource, but I don’t visit it on a regular basis. I simply don’t have the time right now (still working) to work on both O and HO.
I wonder how many other families on these forums have similar stories?
My first love was American Flyer. My parents gave me my first Flyer in 1947. I have an 11’ x 7’ layout in my basement. Two separate tracks running my steam engine on one track and my Baldwin diesel on the other track. I love to follow the CTT forum.
My more recent affection is for HO scale, having started on that side of the hobby 8 years ago. I have a 42’ x 22’ layout in my basement and model the transition period with steam and diesel. That layout is operated in DCC. I am a regular participant in the MRR forums. Those forums are quite active, and the expertise there is invaluable.
I also follow the CT forum. From time to time, there can be some interesting discussions there as well.
The feeling was that the thread was misplaced because it focused on building an S-gauge layout. For the same reason, HO gauge modelers don’t post their discussions on the CTT forum. In fact, the forum administrators have discretion to move such threads to the proper forum.
For those of us who model in both HO gauge and S gauge, your thread on Building a Large American Flyer layout is interesting, inspiring, and useful. But, to a guy who just models in HO gauge, he has little or no interest.
If you over-specialize, you build in weakness. The broader outlook provides better results. Moreover, segregation, either forced or voluntary, isn’t a good idea.
I post occassionally on the MR side but I don’t check -in over there unless I really want to do something specific. It’s just too technical for me. In my rr world, it’s the electronics that are getting phased out so I have little interrest in DCC or C and C or whatever you want to call it. I like the “plug and play” or “put it on the track and turn on the power” kind of operating. I’ve stopped buying modern engines and I’m focusing entirely on Lionel Scouts.
“Model Railroading” refers to the operation of any toy train of any era by any manufacturer running on any gauge track in my opinion. So I consider myself welcome on any forum that fulfills that simple premise.
I keep forgetting about the rest of the forum.[:P] I do browse some other topics under this ‘umbrella’ - I’ve worked in the smaller scales in the past.
I’m not sure why that was an objection, other than people being territorial. I have always thought that Tim’s current layout is much more similar to the kind of layout you would find in the home of an HO or N scale model railroader. It’s large, has lots of running room, and the scenery dwarfs the trains. Not like a lot of the small layouts we see on this side of the forums with tight curves, crowded track plans, and covered with Plasticville. Not meant as a criticism, just a different way of doing things.
Rich my layout is all 3 rail. I have a collection of HO with no place to run it. I have a tall dresser of drawers full of HO Much of this collection is not due to having money but a number of years spent working part time at P & D hobby shop, it gave me a be on the spot chance to get deals at employee discounts.
Nice to hear from you. Sorry to hear that all of that HO equipment is stuffed in a drawer with no place to run it. You ought to sell it on eBay. Always an interest out there in HO stuff.
I do venture over to the MR boards once in awhile. I like to view the Weekend Photo Fun (sans flame-wars), and in particular enjoy the work of Jon Grant. His work can inspire us all.
Zardoz is good for a fresh joke for the water-cooler.
However, when things like Philosphy Friday rear their ugly head, I totally check out. However, it does supply cannon-fodder for a certain “referee” from time-to-time. [dinner]
