The Hudson River Railroad 30th St. Station was demolished in 1931 to build the Morgan Post Office.
Lincoln was there twice, enroute to inauguration and enroute to burial.

So that sure nuff is the Empire State Bldg in the third pic-- and right of it we can see the tops of the two stacks on the Penn Station powerhouse on the south side of 31st St. I’m surprised Penn Station itself doesn’t show up more-- think it’s that light bldg just visible beyond the NY Central platform canopies? Is that the Pennsylvania Hotel beyond it?
Yes, Penn Station is in 2 pictures above and 2 below

Probably an empty milk train
With three-power locomotive, battery, third rail, and oil-electric

HRR charter required service to Chambers St., horses pulled cars to 30th St.

Looking north on 10th Ave at 30th St, the old station was just to the right. Here’s some construction photos from the High Line website.

I must say how much I have appreciated and discovered by looking at these pics and similar ones on this Forum which have dealt with the NYC elevated freight railroad.
I guess many know of elevated commuter railroads but this one has been of especial interest to me as I am more interested in freight operations that passenger.
Thanks a million to the posters.
I would like to use 4th image from top (30th St station) for a publication. If permissible, who would I credit?
thank.
New York Public Library owns the photo. The photographer was Percy Loomis Sperr. http://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47dc-fdf1-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99 http://placesnomore.wordpress.com/tag/percy-loomis-sperr/
Great pic’s of an area that I only knew from working freights out of 30th-72nd Streets yards in late 70’s-early 80’s (PC/CR days).
Some folks hope to see the Knicks and the Rangers and rock’n’roll bands play at a new Madison Square Garden built right where Lincoln’s inaugural train arrived and his funeral train departed.
