I used my little Canon PowerShoot A610’s movie feature, but I think it’s time for a better camera!

Jon…Take a look at Canon’s PowerShot S5 IS digital camera before you buy a stricly digital camcorder.
Jon, depending on what you are looking to do, you have many options. Two things I suggest: First, go to www.Bensbargains.net and check there daily as they often show who is having a special on lots of things and often it includes video cameras of different sorts. Secondly, the “Flip” is a digital camera that has limited memory, but enough to do a few runs around a layout. There was a recent article on converting a gondola to allow for a flip camera to be mounted in it.
If your thoughts are to a larger, more advanced camera, the web site should help too. B&H photo is a good source, but I know there are plenty of others and Bens will have them listed.

We have a PanasonicPV-GS150…It’s a few years old, but works great!
Leica dicomar lens, and DV tapes, and compact remote. Very small, so it fits on a 16 wheel depressed flat car very easily!

We recently got a JVC GR-D870U. It hase more features than I’ll likely use, uses DV tapes and has provisions for a SD card to store still pictures.
I’ve used it at the race track to help us debug the car and review the races. It works well in low light situations. I’ve only taken a couple of train videos.
Still learning to make friends with the transfer from camera to computer.
Now that Kurt mentions is, I think this one will fit on a depresses center flat car too.
The Canon Vixia line are very nice. These are great camcorders but they aren’t cheap. There is even a model which uses SDHC flash cards for primary storage. This is really good if you intend to do any post production/editing.
Try CNET http://www.cnet.com/ Its an electronics site that has reviews, etc. on electronic products and comparitive pricing. Also those listed must have good customer reviews to be allowed to be listed. My vid-cam is a Canon ZR85, it has both card and tape. I’m just starting to learn to download and make vids. I need a DVD burner installed into the comp., only had a CD burner.
If you are looking for a cheap HD pocked video camera, the Kodak Zi-8 is set to be released Sept 15th. It is probably the best pocked video camera in it’s class.

How about something that is small enough to fit inside a box car?
Looks good to me, JB.[tup]
Need to edit out that blank 2 mins. (Kept waiting for something [D)])
Liked how you changed scenes, and you remembered the 2 biggest laws of video making: I must not pan - I must not zoom.
Bring that thingie to Baltimore next summer. [;)]
That Kodak Zi8 looks great! No more clunky video bags, and I can attach an external mic too!

Fife,
I do want to do the Baltimore convention. Looks like fun! The dead space at the end of the video is where the sound track was potted down. I have now edited the end of the clip.

I have some small color cameras with sound we used for surveillance. They will rubber band right on top of the loco, and then you can send the signal by wireless to your TV! You can sit and watch your big screen TV of your own train layout. I know this sounds pretty infant in nature, but there is something neat about watching your own layout. One might ask why not simply go to the train room to watch it. Well, I don’t know. I like the perspective of being on top of the engine. Just when you all thought I had about disappeared, I come up with some bizzare in nature such as this. The camera’s are fairly cheap by the way. Jake
