Joe - we sat for 45 min at our favorite crossing - on the wrong side - while a coal train kept going back and forth - tacking cars on it’s rear end. It has become business as usual to block the 1st, 2nd, 14th and 17th street crossings while we “build our trains”. The police are called, but it has become so routine, I doubt they bust their buttons to get to the head end. We are the only ones that enjoy the delay!
You should look at a city map of Niagara Falls, Ontario and track the Stamford Subdivision. Oh my…the stupid city mind you for some reason of misguided wisdom, decides to eliminate most of the bridge overpasses-most of which are major arteries. CN runs 150+ car trains through Niagara Falls and a hot box detector is near by. Can you guess what happens sometimes for half to a full hour during rush hour?[:-^]
yeh…last week i was stopped on sibley avenue in south chicago while a train stopped to meet another. it was just short of an hour before it got on it’s way. got a little antsy after a while as i was getting hungry and i wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods…

Holland, Michigan was the scene of several incidents in which CSX stopped traffic in the downtown area. It got to be such a problem that the Holland Police started writing tickets to CSX for being stopped in a crossing for more than five minutes.
Completely off topic, but…
You want good fried chicken? Next time you’re on I-80 out near LaSalle/Peru, check out Ripps Tavern in Ladd, Ill. (just west of LaSalle, if I recall, and north of I-80). The only thing they serve is chicken: chicken tenders (for kids), or a quarter or half for adults (light or dark, your choice). For an appetizer, they serve “crispies” (I belive that’s the name they use). Essentially, it’s a basket of the crispy beer batter that’s fallen off in the deep fryer. They strain them out of the fryer and serve them with pickles (the round kind like you’d get on a burger at McDonalds). Why pickels? You take the pickle and use it to pick up the crispies by pinching them. Sounds crazy, but it’s actually quite tasty. The locals line up to get in… it’s amazing.
A word of advice: take a strong antacid before you go (like Zantac). I’ve been there twice, the first time I went in without taking an antacid. I literally had acid reflux for three days (it’s more than just a little greasy), and I was 30 at the time and didn’t suffer from chronic acid reflux. The second time I was prepared and was fine.
Not heathly, but darn good. Everything in moderation, right?
If you’re ever on your way across Illinois, or maybe don’t mind a detour from Rochelle, it’s well worth the trip.

yes!! i live 2 miles from there. exit 70 off I-80. wed-sun. awesome chicken, i get take out from there at least once a week. stop down to torri’s for some ice cream after the chicken, highly recommended.

but we have a place here in Lincoln that is very good - Lee’s. Chicken is chicken except for the above, but their batter is out of this world! Come to Lincoln, Bergie - you won’t need acid reflux pills!

In North West Tacoma I was on the wrong side of the BNSF who was making up a south err EB train which delayed every one who had been eating dinner at a nearby eatery at the marina on the north side of the tracks. It took around 45 minutes to finish up & leave town [:I][8D][:D]
Bergie, yes Ripps in Ladd is the BEST. When I rode motorcyles, 40 or 50 of us would make the hour trip at least twice a month for chicken. The other patrons would get a little nervous when we all rode in but we weren’t THAT kind of bikers. It is the best chicken around. Ripp can beat the **** out of any old Colonel in a white suit anyday.
Up until 2002, in Horicon Wisconsin, when any Northbound Wisconsin and Southern train would come into the yard, it would virtually cut the city in half. THis became a concern for the city Fathers, as you couldn’t get emergency equipment to the other side of town. FInally the WSOR build a classification yard North of the last major street(and their yard), and now they just block it for the amount of time it takes them to get through.

Ice cream AFTER a 1/2 of a fried chicken? Are you crazy?! [:)] You might be able to pull that off when your home is 2 miles away, but certainly not when it’s over 2 hours. It’s hard enough staying awake with just the chicken; the ice cream topper would probably push me into a food coma.

The yuppies here in Philly are yelling about CSX blocking an entrance to a trail along the schukyill (sp?) river (never mind there is another one only about 1/2 mile away)
as for the chicken, the only places i know of are chain places… KFC, Popeye’s, and Church’s chicken. To be honest, i’ve only tried the Colonel’s chicken… now if you’ll excuse me, i think i’ll get myself some…
