I doubt that very much. Lawmakers would never allow one railroad in the west. However there are a couple of people on this board that would jump for joy if BNSF were to go away.
If they did, it would all over Wall Street. Once you acquire 5% or more of the equity of a listed firm, you have to file a form 13D with the SEC. You can’t acquire such holdings surreptitiously, not filing gets you into serious trouble with the Feds.
Its just that, a rumor, UP Can’t afford to buy stock even if they wanted to, if it was going to happen, BNSF would be buying UP cause BNSF has the cash and UP don’t!
Union Pacific…the largest railroad in the country…has kept its original name…BUT it’s not very good, compared to BNSF. I know what you mean, it would be VERY, VERY sad to see BNSF go. At least they have two names of the previous railroads in their current name (Burlington Northern Santa Fe). Union Pacific just gobbles them up and they’re gone. I’d rather see the UP go. Of course, there are pros and cons between each. All things considered, I like the UP okay. One of the pros of UP is that they are making Heritage locos…BUT, one of their cons is I believe they hold up Amtrak trains all the time and don’t really care. What’s more important here? I know that BNSF probably wouldn’t mind if Amtrak was gone, but at least they try to move them along. The Southwest Chief is usually only 30 minutes to an hour late, while trains like the California Zephyr (which are partly run over UP tracks) are usually 2-4 hours late. And everyone knows how the Sunset Limited’s done… that’s just one thing the UP doesn’t do right. I’m sure there are many more. BNSF…well, what’s wrong with them?
In many of UP’s mergers they have combined the names of the railroads. When they merged with the Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific they took Pacific from those names and combined them with Union from its own name. Same thing happend with the Southern Pacific merger[}:)]
Evan, what did I say…I know that where you got it from says he got it from is a reliable source, but I already said that it’s dead wrong…
By 6 o’clock yesterday, I had basically heard that there would be a UP-CP-BNSF merger…and now it’s crept to this forum…gotta love weekends.
There is no way the feds would allow one railroad in the west. This would bring throngs of shippers screaming “MONOPOLY!”. UP has to know this so why would they be waisting money on BNSF stock? Is it more profitable then their own company?
