Jeffrey's Trackside Diner For May 2025

From what I thought I was over hearing, I thought it was the U.S.D.A. they were doing battle with. But then again I was only half listening. :dog:

Unfortunately a dog that will be a working dog has to be vetted and start its training well before six months of age. I know we stopped sending dogs for working positions south years ago because of rule changes. Like I said, no skin off our nose.

Good morning Diners. A cloudy day. I’ll have a full English please, Chloe. I’ll sit over by the corner and let the world pass by for a little while.

Good morning

Nice pics David. That beautiful sunset with the cruise ship sure looks inviting. Didn’t know 7802 was a Scottish loco. Just got lucky with that one.

TF. 7802 ‘Bradley Manor’ is a Great Western Railway locomotive. Nowhere near Scotland :upside_down_face:

The furthest point south the North British Railway got in England. The Tyne Rail Bridge west of Hexham

We live further up the line near the Scottish Border.

Good morning everyone. Chloe, coffee to go please.

It’s graduation Sunday at church this morning. Any graduates, high school or college, are recognized today, and both my girls will be up there! None of the doughnuts that York1 gets, but there will be cake afterwards, so there’s that.

Still sore from all the landscape work yesterday. The hot tub helped last night, but unfortunately has worn off this morning. Maybe just getting going will help.

Another cold and dreary day here. Hopefully a quiet, peaceful Sunday.

Take care everyone.

Brent,

Agony for the Jets, but especially for Scheifele. I can’t fault him for taking a shot at stopping the breakaway with 15 sec. left in regulation. Almost escaped the box in OT. Alas, Hellebuyck was screened by his own defenseman and didn’t get a timely look at the winner.

A whole continent of players and fans whose hearts went out to Scheifele. You could see it in the line after the game. Hoping he can draw on that in the days ahead.

Welcome to life, everyone - and lessons in class.

John

Good morning from the land of cold, wet weather.

Woke up with a text from the Father-in law saying he just booked a flight to Heathrow, he is going to see his brother who is not well. For the last two years he has been saying he will need to go home when his brother dies and we have been saying, why don’t you go while he is still alive and have a good visit with him. So he got word he is not well and booked a flight. Now, dear old Dad-in-law is 88 and not as sharp as he maybe should be for a trip like that. My wife has check and there are seats available so we are wondering if she should go with him. Always something happening that makes you raise your eyebrows.

I have met both his brothers and they are all very accomplished people. They escaped from France through Spain to England when the Germans were advancing and the story of their trip would make for a good movie. I told him I will drive him to the airport, so that is four hours of my day planned. :smirk: Oh oh, my wife just asked where the suitcases were. Could be wine, women and song for me for a few days. Whoops. I mean wine, trains and song. Did I say that?

Somehow, I don’t think I am getting into the train room today.

The siding is a runaway track through that stretch of what I believe was a 4% grade. There were several runaway tracks along that stretch that would be manned and the switch thrown if the train on the downward trip did not seem to be in control. This stretch was replaced by the Spiral Tunnels. The bridge in the photo is still there today and was used as a bridge for the new highway when it was put in.

The grade was a site of many wrecks and if you ever are in the area, you can visit some ghost.

You can just see the old bridge on the left.

All the best to all.

To have the movie there has to be a story. Time to put pen to paper, Brent. Many a story has been ‘lost’. Don’t let yours be one of them.

Now you know the feeling when you are listening to your favourite music and you have to join in ‘and help’?

NorthBrit, oh yes, they do tend to keep us on track. Try altering the narative for, say “The three bears” and see how you get away with that!

In layout news, the latest batch of trees are now planted. There was enough time to do that after our elder grandson treated us to lunch. This is a first for any of them, a fact he sort of acknowledged as he picked up the tab. Delightful visit, and, as mentioned, time for trains too!

Here’s a pic of the day’s forestation. Small trees in this locale.
Also, made a casting for a ‘wait until it’s necessary’ rock face, and it is setting in place on a curved setting. Haven’t used plaster in quite a while. Held the mold in place with an adjustable knife, which was just the thing as I could adjust the tension.

Ya, poor guy held it together until the end. Full credit to him a class act.

If anyone wants a team to lose in any sport just ask me to start cheering for them.

It is Toronto today, maybe I should cheer for the Panthers.

It has been an interesting day on the home front. FIL is determined to go on his own. His son is driving him to the Airport, we don’t even know if he has a current Passport. Guess we will find out. I don’t think he trust anyone including his own kids.

My Mom would ask me to go drive with her every so often as she got older just to make sure I thought she was safe. She also asked me to take over her finances at some point even though she was still quite capable of looking after them herself.

My parents and my wife’s parents could not be more different. With us the family house is the family house and all are welcome to come home or stay if passing through. With them, the kid’s had to be out of the house as soon as they graduated high school. My wife put herself through school and became a Veterinary Surgeon with degrees in Agriculture, genetics and animal nutrition. She did not get a dime of help from her parents.

GO LEAFS GO!

My family was much the same way as yours. My parents had an open house to any relative or even friend who might be passing through. We do the same. I hope your father-in-law doesn’t find out when he lands in Europe that he needs a passport.

He is a British citizen as well as Canadian so that is not a problem. However you cannot board an international flight without a Passport because the airline is responsible for you if you are not allowed entry at your destination. We just talked to his son and his Canadian Passport is good, but his British one has expired so he is good to go.
