Jeffrey's Trackside Diner For May 2025

Her-in Doors and I have discovered the UK TV series “Time Team” an archaeology programme which covers all different eras. We find it very interesting.

They even carried out a dig on a 19th century navvy camp at site of the Rise Hill Tunnel on the Settle and Carlisle railway line.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them. Kia Kaha.

Cheers, the Bear. :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit. A bonus in the form of a song, “The Permanent Way” by Big Big Train which references the “Inland Navigators”

Good morning

Unfortunately, I’m seeing some gloom and doom posts here again, but some helpful responses as well. I’m hopeful you find resolution to the problems your facing, Jimmy, …Gabe.

Please remember, we are all the creators of our own destiny, by the decisions that we make. Choose wisely my friends. Thoughts and best wishes to you both.

Welcome to the Diner TF, what will you be having this morning?

Oh, thanks Flo, I’m thinking I’ll try the 4-4-0 Special please!

Would you like your 4-4-0 with some UFO on top?

Yes, that sounds good! Thanks Flo

Make it a good Thursday gentlemen :slightly_smiling_face:

Good morning from the sunny West Coast where it is 12c.

Wife is off to a dog show for four days of showing, she comes home every night with this one but it is long days.

Both CN and CP are running ads for conductor jobs, even on TV. Signing and re-location bonuses are pretty darn good. I know a couple of young guys who went that direction about five years ago and just love it. I could have worked for the railways anything outside works for me, that includes driving a train where the scenery is always changing.

Had two uncles who drove trains out of Revelstoke, I found their shop talk fascinating.

I was always outside with my job, lots of driving but the view was always changing. One day the regional manager came running after me and said “I need you to take over”! I said , “take over what”? Apparently the Superintendent had suffered a heart attack and no one above him knew how things really worked. I ended up riding a desk for six months until they got a replacement. I was not happy sitting on my butt.

Going to be a lazy day today, nothing needs fixing, I am always right on top of anything that breaks or wears out. A couple of contractors will be in and out to do small things while the mud dries.

My wife is a Veterinary Surgeon with a few extra specialist degrees including Repro, Genetics, Nutrition, Agriculture and a few more. She went to Vet school a couple of years longer than most Vets do. We got married when I was 40, I paid off her car loan and what was left of her student loan. She had a house and a mortgage. So she went to school for eight years post secondary, had to still live and pay the bills but had no serious income. In that eight years I worked my good paying blue collar job. We worked out what her education cost her and loss of real income while going to school and how long it would take for her to just break even with me once she had started work, it was shocking.

So Gabe, a gas station job is something that puts you through University. A railroad job or a job in the resource industry somewhere in the world will get you six figures if you work hard. Make a decision and get going.

Time to play a few tunes to keep the Arthritis in my hands in check and then hop on the Deere.

All the best to all.

Howdy diners. Flo, bacon cheeseburger with cajun fries please.

As can a job in the trades. Welding, pipefitting, millwrighting, that sort of thing. What’s more is that apprenticeships are usually paid or if you go the trade school route, they are usually reasonably priced.

I love it! Looks like a Trackmobile and a Freightliner had a baby!

Watched my youngest play her last ever home soccer game last night in the rain. The “coach” wouldn’t let her start since she isn’t going to be around for the next 2 games (district games - lose and go home). Didn’t put her in until about halfway through the first half. The game ended about 8 minutes into the second half as her team mercied the other one. (an 8 goal lead at or after halftime ends the game - scoreboard read 8-0 when it ended) She still scored two goals. So proud of her and so ready for her to be off playing on her college team. She is too.

Jimmy, hope you are doing better.

@Track_Fiddler , does the 4-4-0 special have American fries? (I know. Horrible Dad joke, but I had to!)

Have a good day everyone!

LUNCH TIME!

Just got in from scubbing that big deck with the Kid. Picked up a gallon of Dawn, and a narrow push broom that worked great. We tag teamed it, and the decking is squeeky clean for the paint stain Monday. A pressure washer would have torn that old deck up man!

Judy got us a room in Rochester this weekend. Our friends, The Brianna Ray Band is playing there. So were going to have some fun being band groupies again

 I’m sorry Mike, but no. The 4-4-0 Speacial is, 4 eggs, 4 strips of bacon, with no toast.

Flo knows that I’ll usually get UFO with my scrambled eggs. (Unseasoned Fried Onions)

When I did some work at our house, I wanted to rent a pressure washer. The guy told me not to use it on a deck or house siding unless there is an extended dry spell. He said it forces moisture into the wood and that moisture will then undermine any painting or staining.

I didn’t know that (or even if it’s true). I see a lot of people pressure wash their houses before painting.

Huh! Never heard that one John, but it certainty makes sense that you dont want any moisture leeching out from under the paint.

Hey Diners, It’s been a while, Life’s been crazy, but I’m alive. Haven’t done much, but I might go out railfanning or trade some stuff with my friend. Currently on the final yearly push In school, 4 major exams, 3 projects, and homework’s ramped up. I’ve been too tired to even think of modelling. However, I’m planning to get a few things done this weekend. Might also help my grandfather with his '87 Corvette. The alarm system’s acting up. Again. Might also get to use his airbrush and/or saughtering Iron.

My dad’s been getting Even worse Lately and intruding on me and trying to control me, His most recent random thing being that I wear sweaters a lot, Even though it’s actually cold out still. Might stay at a friends as well, although I’d ruffle some feathers, but worse comes to worse I can Dulfersitz Rappel. If I leave, I might make a quick post, Because I think if I leave my dad will try to use my PC against me, so I’ve got plans to take it’s SSD along with me, and potentially oversee it’s destruction.

Anyways, Long story, but yeah.

Well, this morning a beef curry was requested for dinner tonight. Just about to prep and the order was changed to a Chinese meal instead.. A change of ingredients just in time.
I wonder if the Diner has the same challenges?

Managed to see the train room earlier.

Good afternoon from sunny but still chilly Pictou, Nova Scotia.

@NorthBrit I like the scrap yard. I have good sized pill bottle full of bits and bobs which could well end up in such a scene.
Thursday in this household means house-work. Despite that, I was able to produce another batch of trees. Installing will have to wait, things to do tomorrow, and the evenings are usually taken up with TV News and You Tube videos (mostly Brit shows as there isn’t much else we like to watch). Here, to assist my total tree tally, is today’s production.
