Jeffrey's Trackside Diner For May 2025

Forgot to mention, the birds’ names are Geo and Theo, Im taking both of them to a professional to look at them. I think Theo’s right wing is broken, and she may be paralyzed on her right leg since she can’t move it at all.

Good morning folks. Cup of coffee and a scone for me.

Not much work on the layout itself this weekend. My parents were visiting and helped organize the mess that was my apartment. I now have a proper desk for working on model train stuff so I’m not hunched over a coffee table while sitting on the couch. Train car boxes and layout building supplies are now organized, and my mother gave me the fantastic idea of having a cloth skirt go around the side of the layout. Everything looks much better. I also have a storage cabinet that’ll fit under the layout being shipped to me for more storage.

David, sorry to hear about your back. Hope you recover quickly!

Good morning, diners. Chloe, I’ll have bacon, eggs, and black coffee, please.

It was a busy weekend doing nothing. We are dog-sitting a neighbor’s dog, so most of my days were spent walking the dogs and playing with them. Having another dog in the house is like having another kid.

I was able to fix most of my fence. That last blizzard really did a number on the fence. It was a lot of heavy wet snow and 75 MPH winds. It broke off six of the 4x4 posts. That’s what comes from living on the prairie with very few trees :musical_note: …where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. :musical_note:

David, hope you’re on the mend. Taking care of Dawn with you having a bad back doesn’t sound like fun.

Other diners, it sounds like many of you are making good progress with your layouts. I wish I could say the same.

I’m waiting today to get my latest fun package from Firecrown. I get an email from the post office when a package is out for delivery.

When I was young, the industrial sidings were common in every town and city in the country. Now, traveling around, it seems that most have disappeared. If the sidings are still there, they are unused.

In my little town, there used to be seven different sidings to businesses. Now there are two – one to an ethanol plant and one to a concrete company. In most of my area, grain elevators are the only sidings. The mile-long trains roar through town at 40 mph, very seldom stopping.

An industrial siding in Chicago:

Have a great day, everyone.

Good afternoon all. Thanks for the well wishes gentlemen. It is not my back that is the challenge. It is my left leg. (Possibly confused with der5997 who has a bad back.)

I had the physiotherapist this morning seeing to the leg. Got a number of exercises to do. They seem to be working.

Are you talking about the blizzard that hit at the beginning of January? That system blew through Kansas on the 3rd and we received over 15 inches. I have never seen that much snow before! It was nuts!

Hi, Nimbus. No, the storm that hit us was mid-March. It knocked down some of the big feeder power lines and we went without electricity for a day. Some people around here were without power for three days.

We didn’t have as much snow as you – the problem was that it was the heavy wet snow that stuck to everything. Once everything was covered and heavy, the wind took its toll.

Glad that there was no blood clot!
For most of us access to the layout involves stairs. Certainly so for me.
I can sit at the kitchen table and make trees, but installing them(my intention for this afternoon) means a trip downstairs. Trip as in journey, I really don’t need to fall!
Should I meet with success, I’ll post a pic.
Cheers

Good morning all from the sunny West side where it is 16c.

I just got back from a quick 5.42kms with a mutt. Knocked it off in 41 minutes through the 100 acre wood in spite of having to stopped for two calls from the wife who was at Costco. She sent me photos of two lights as the one on the ceiling of my office broke. I guess I will have to install that later.

Sorry to hear about every ones aches and pains, I have had more broken bones than I can remember as well as torn ligaments and sprained everything. I am still in pretty good shape though for a 68 year old.

Nice of you to look after the Robins Gabe. I remember coming home from work one day along the freeway and I saw a Bald Eagle on the side of the road in some distress. I stopped and grabbed one of my Government issue Gortex jackets out of the back of the car and put it over the Eagle and zipped it up. I was only ten minutes away from my wifes hospital so went right there, we took an X-Ray and ended up putting the poor thing down. He was a stunning specimen that obviously had been hit by a car.

Jimmy, sorry that the turnout wasn’t great for your open house. Did you have donuts? If so John would have made the trip.

Lot’s to do today.

All the best to all.

Good afternoon Diners!

We had a welcome vistor around tea-time (long-time friend now living in another community) who brought a lobster. We try for at least one feed each year, so this evening that was dinner. Very tasty, but somehow not as good as those on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Those, quite simply, cannot be bettered…
After tea I had time to install the latest batch of trees, and am quite happy with the result. I’m filling in the top ridge bordering the N30n track. Our daughter thought the area needed a small ruined looking tower, and that will be incorporated in the next scenery push.
Here’s how things stand this evening…Processing: 20250505_172311.jpg…

Evening

Ju-Ju and me just got back from a nice four day weekend visiting family in Wisconsin. Sorry, I’d forgotten to call in

We did some things that needed to be done for Judy’s 80 year old mom, and switched the snow blower out for the lawn deck on the John Deere for Dave. He’s got a life long back injury, and can’t do that kinda stuff anymore.

Our favorite Breanna Rae Band was playing at the casino where we lodge. We might have unitentuallaly became band groupies, as we’ve gotten to know all the band members personally, and they come hang at our table on break. We are going to all get together at Steve’s next fall.

Steve’s band, The Sundowners, practice in his pole barn. He wants to jamb and play steel guitar with Breanna. Perhaps I’ll bring my bass to see how much I’m an armature :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

They say your too old when the music is too loud. Must be getting too old over here then

My brother-in-law tought me some origami he knows by heart. Now I’ll be cursed for life to never leave another normal tip, with Judy getting me to fold them he said

I’m not going to bore ya guys posting a bunch of pictures from up there like I’d normally do. But thought you’d like this obviously historic prairie grain elevator that was on (get this) Railroad Street. Apparently, Railroad Street used to be a railroad line at one time.

Just love old prairie grain elevators, and railriad history. Perhaps I’ll be looking into this one, the next time we’re up there and have more time to spare.

Have a good night Kids :slightly_smiling_face:
