Going to be in Las Vegas. One day devoted to local train watching. Any
suggestions of where to go in immediate Las vegas area. No need to
have continual activity ie: Barstow.
Well 1 block west of the UPRR terminal in Vegas there is a good spot. I only know how to get there by memory but you can get head on shots of the interlocking where 3 tracks merge into 2. I stand at the south side of the Texaco station their. As a guide line it is a few blocks north & a few blocks east of the Stratosphere. You will find it using the guidelines I posted. You only have to go to Dagget east of Barstow to get UPRR/BNSF action but it is at least 2 hours each way from Vegas. You can Mapquest that jaunt for the real driving time. [:p][:)][:D]

…If you are into old abandoned routes drive over through Henderson and on out through the pass {where the railroad used to cross Rt.93…Don’t know if it is in anymore…and on out past Boulder City and on down to the dam. If you look you may still see where the route went that was used to haul equipment and supplies in building the dam…even tunnels. I used to look at this old route many years ago and do not know what of it may be still visible.
I like Garnet. Trains there are in a very echo-like environment. (Garnet is a few siding north of Vegas, near Highway 93 and I-15)
Thanks for the tip I will get there as I am going to Bryce & Zion from Vegas! [:)][:p]
If you want to get out of town a bit but not drive too far I suggest taking I-15 north. Just a few miles north of town the tracks and road come fairly close together again. That’s where the tracks start snaking there way through the foothills. There are many places to take pictures. And lots of cool angles could be had with Las Vegas in the background. Its a little trickey sometimes to do that because the sun wont be at your back. But there are pleanty of excellent places to get S curve shots. Or just a good secluded place to watch trains from.
I don’t know the name of the exit. Just drive about 7 miles north of Charleston Blvd. When you see the tracks, interstate & hills come together take the next exit to the west and it will lead you to the tracks. From the crossing you can drive South or North along the tracks till you find a place that suits you.
With some serious glass you can also see /photo the automobile yard (North Las Vegas Yard I think).
Thanks When I go north from Vegas I will use this info! [8D][:D]

If you take I-15 south and exit west at the Blue Diamond-Pahrump exit, the UP main has a grade crossing about one or two miles west of I-15. Be aware that there is no real shade near the grade crossing.
I15 runs east/west. Do you mean towards LAX or towards SLC? [:o)][:o)]
I-15 is North/South where I live, And I’m sure it is elsewhere too. San Diego on the south, Montana in the north(Butte area).
So north is SLC bound.
Blue Diamond is a good spot too w/ dramatic rock formations. But I have yet to do any real exploration in that area.
Maybe my directional is in the off position. When you leave Vegas for LAX are you not going west maybe some south as well but for sure west? If you are going to SLC you are surely going east with some north sprinkled into the equation. In any case the place mentioned is towards LAX? [:D][:)]

leaving Vegas SSW to LA , NNE to Salt Lake. definatly more north/south than e/w
OK for a E/coast guy anytime I want to reach the Pacific ocean it is west! I understand though that it is more south then west Vegas to LAX & more north then east from Vegas to SLC [8D][:p]
