Liquid Nails for Projects okay to secure cork to pink foam?

ssia.

i need to glue my cork AND basswood turnout bases to my foam layout subroadbed… been a while since I glued teh foam to the plywood, and I don’t remember what I used.

and also, can I use the LNFP to glue my flextrack and wooden ties to the cork?

I usually use wood glue, but you could use liquid nails for projects.Good luck!

You can, yes, but you will never be able to reuse any of it. If you use caulk, the bond can be broken without destroying everything.

Where are you getting flextrack with wooden ties?

The liquid nails adhesive is a permanent job. You probably wouldn’t be able to salvage either the track or roadbed if you ever want to make changes. I’m in the process of building my first layout in over 50 years and I’ve been into a trial and error process following tips received here and elsewhere. My first trial used Liquid Nails adhesive; it was only after starting my second trial that the error became apparent. I’m into trial 5 now and have settled on the cheapest non Silicone latex caulk I can find. I will be able to reuse the track easily… not as certain about the roadbed. All should clean up ok with water but the trial section of foam (WS) roadbed might prove stubborn to clean. The cheap caulk held everything down fine as did the LN adhesive but one is rather permanent after it dries. Since there is only 1" pipnk foam available down here on the South coast, I used the liquid nails adhesive to attach it to my framing and to bond a second layer of pink foam to the first… its stuck tight and no damage visible anywhere. Roy (in Corpus Christi)

I’ve used Liquid Nails for Projects for pink foam to benchwork, WS foam roadbed to pink foam, and track to WS foam roadbed. It is permanent, but I’ve been able to separate track from the foam roadbed and re-use the track successfully. The roadbed isn’t going to be salvageable. The track will require some cleanup, too.

I put down too much, by the way. Use a thin bead and spread it around.

Not a big fan. I’d use plain cheap caulk. Save the Liquid Nails for fastening the foam to the plywood.

Actually, I pretty much hate Liquid Nails in general - I bought some of it for the intended purpose of fastening a fixture to tile. I didn’t use liquid nails for projects. I used the Liquid Nails that said it was for that purpose. Dries in 24 hours it said. 4 days later it STILL wasn’t ready to go. After about a week it finally was set and the fixture firmly attached, but wow…

I used the “for projects” and “for foam” to do my whole layout. Works fine. The “for foam” dries a lot slower.

Greg,

Buy the DAP Alex Plus Acrylic Latex caulk.

Pluses:

  1. Inexpensive - Only $2 per tube. I get it from Home Depot.

  2. Quick - Starts setting up in 40 minutes. Cures overnight. (Allow I let it cure for a full 24 hours.)

  3. Little to no odor - Needs no ventilation

  4. Non-toxic - Most of the other adhesive like Liquid Nails have some nasty chemicals in there formulation. It goes along with #3.

  5. Different colors - Comes in white (plain & antique), black, bronze, gray, tan, brown, almond, clear (plain & crystal)

  6. Holds very well but can be peeled up using a putty knife with little damage to foam. Has a 35-year durability guarantee.

I’ve used this stuff for tacking down both the cork roadbed to my foam base, as well as the track to the cork roadbed. Works and holds great.

I’ve used LN for projects and the caulk. Both work. LN is more permanent. I like the tan caulk, since after painting, if I miss spots, they don’t show up as much on the scenery–just look like earth. In fact, I was using some of the caulk yesterday to adhere foam and track, and it dried quickly and securely. I got the results I was hoping for.

wow thanks everybody. thats what i needed to hear.

i’m gonna return my LNFP, I think, and get some of that DAP stuff… i mean, well… ehhh i donno if i’ll ever want to change my trackplan. i guess i’ll have to mull that one over.

but do you guys think the LNFP would be best for gluing the WS foam risers/inclines to foam? or could i still use that DAP caulk?

Greg,

Foam to foam…foam to cork…cork to cork…cork to wood…wood to foam. I’d stick with the DAP caulk…but that’s me. Home Depot only had the clear and white caulk in stock. I went with the white so I could see it better.

Tom

Not to argue with Tom, but I prefer an adhesive caulk such as Polyseamseal. I use it for gluing foam, cork and track and can remove track and cork without much effort.

It can be purchased at Home Depot and comes in several colors.

It’s all the same stuff, really. I used the Polyseamseal brand only because it was 10 cents a tube cheaper then DAP brand at my Home Depot. Hey wow, I saved 10 cents on my layout! Because one tube was all it took for the whole thing. Construction adhesives like Liquid Nails are different from caulks, mainly that they are more adhesive than sealer, and generally dry solid rather then retaining flexibility.

That’s okay, Don, you can disagree with me. (No, he can’t! Yes, he CAN!!)

Tom

Just buy the cheapest caulk you can find, in whatever color you like. Wal-Mart is good for this.

i think i might actually have a tube of that Polyseamseal stuff left somewhere… i’ll give that a try for putting a little cork down later tonight.

here’s to putting off my PSYC 240 reading and laying track on my layout!!! lol… j/k
