Long Island Rail Road East Side Access tunnel breaks through
with all this hullabaloo about LIRR trains to GCT, why no agitation to get New Haven trains to Penn Station? That would have been EASY.
I hope I live long enough. With politics and cost overruns–2029, anyone?
Penn is supposedly at capacity right now. Maybe when they reroute some LI trains to GCT there will be room for NH at Penn.
Trains from New Haven everyday run into Penn station. These are the Amtrak trains, not the MetroNorth commuter trains. Trains coming from Connecticut can go to either station via run of the mill switching somewhere between Greenwich, CT and the NYC border. LIRR trains could conceivably enter Grand Central now but to do so they must travel north off Long Island and up to that place I alluded to earlier where the switch is and then most likely “back in” to GCT. All of this would make it operationally impossible as the rails are crowded to capacity with the existing traffic, to say nothing of what the ride time between say Merrick and GCT would then turn out to be - all to put the train about a mile from where it already terminates
They’ve been talking about this since the 60’s!!
…Are there any working projects ongoing now to transform the “Old Post Office” into a “new” Penn Station facility…?
I commute on the lirr everyday. The amount of work done is monumental! For NYC standards, they have made enormous strides. This east side tunnel project is soon to ne a.reality and.a.huge pressure relief for us long island commuters. The sunnyside yards and surrounded.areas have all been transformed. New expanded right of ways, modern signaling , new.tunnels , bridges all being built while one of the busiest railroads continues to operates.

Regarding the post office…a lot of.rumors as of late …that will be the new Penn Station. Sure seems that way considering all of the.visible.neglect that exists with Penn Station currently. They aren’t spending any money with upkeep in the station. My only guess is a move is in the works. Btw another great project in NYC was the rescue of the old high lime rr. Good.things continue to happen with railroads around here! Both active and.abandoned.

How many years and billions over budget is this project SO FAR? And how much of that is due to LIRR’s decision to take the most expensive method of adding platforms at GCT?
A lot of people are probably unaware that dual mode trains from diesel territory won’t be able to use ESA because the East River tunnel is a few inches too low for the equipment to fit, so even more people will go through the twice daily hell of changing trains at badly overcrowded Jamaica Station.
