Looking for good roof shots or dimensions on Passenger SD units

I’m working on kitbashing an SDP35 in N scale, and I’m looking for information on the equipment on the loco roof for the steam generator. If anyone has good detail shots on the roof or dimensions of the equipment, I’d greatly appreciate it! Thanks all!

Would Google Maps imagery work?

No, I’d definitely need more resolution than Google Maps/Earth could provide. Thanks for offering though!

Yeah, Of course! I’ll ask my buddy in Iowa City he has a few SDP35s, I can ask him for a few shots, they are O-Scale though. I hope that’s ok @N_Scale_Train_Boy

That would be helpful for locating the equipment, yeah. Thanks!

So he hasn’t texted me back regarding any images of the HO SDP35 but he did give me the dimensions he used when he did the kitbash on his unit

You may be able to work out dimensions from the diagram on page 8.

Thanks Bear! Definitely helpful in terms of Front/Back alignments, but I know theres some left/right offset as well, so definitely still looking for a top shot if possible, as well as (hopefully) some measurements if anyone has them. I’d even take a scale ruler on an O or HO model!

I’m not up to play regarding brass locomotives but I gather that Overland’s offerings are fairly accurate, prototype wise.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Bear! That’s extremely helpful, I was looking for this kind of picture and for some reason couldn’t get to it!

Don’t know if this is helpful, but here’s a view of the short hood with steam generator details on a Burlington SD9:

Photo is from the Burlington Route Historical Society’s photo gallery.

Check out this shot.

I googled “EMD SDP35 Locomotive” and found this image.

When it comes to nailing the details of a prototype locomotive Overland Models can’t be beat. They literally have taken the blueprints to the freaking thing along with any and all pictures to their manufacturer in Korea to get the things correct.

I realize this is only providing a photo of a model, which or may not be accurate, but here’s an Atlas HO scale SDP35. This is an old photo, but I can take additional photos, if it will help.

Maybe this will be more helpful. The scale ruler is set at the same height of the roof.

This is exactly what I was hoping for, thank you! With the scale ruler in there, I can scale the diameters and rough positions, and with the other great reference photos people have shared I can fine tune things. Thank you all!

The Youngstown group that bought ex–EL SDP45 3639 (CR 6670) took an enormous number of detail photos (320), some of which might be helpful:

MTM’s ex-GN SDP40 was recently repainted and I believe operates on the Osceola & St. Croix where it could be measured and detailsphotographed.

Neither of these is an SDP35, but at least it’s a back-up if you can’t find rivet-counter sources.
