Soot fire. That was a fairly common occurance with some of those coal burners.

I gotta ask…what are those side sheilds for at the front of the loco?

They are called elephant ears. They are used to direct the steam from the cylinders up around the boiler, thereby not obscuring the vision of the engineer.

Some UP’s had em. (Like the 4-8-4)

Basically an early version of an air spoiler…cool!

They directed air upwards to blow the smoke higher so that it wouldn’t be a problem. they didn’t have much to do with appearance and everything to do with funcionality.
