Last week I was delivering in Ashtabula, Oh next to the CSX yard and it was full of Metro-North commuter cars. Some had painted over reporting marks, some didn’t.Anyone know anything about them being there?
What type of cars? Stainless dc multiple units with a blue stripe designed for high level loacing only with two “quarter point” double sliding doors on each side? If so, they are the 1967-era Budd M1’s now replaced by the new and similar but improved M-7’s. I imagine they are slated either for resale, possibly overseas or to scrap. Some of the bodies should be in good sound structural shape. Budd equipment “never dies.”
Most of 'em were the Horizon type cars.
Metro North is not scrapping or selling any of the shoreliners(horizon) type cars, and only once off property are at Dansville New York for rebuilding by Bombardier.
You probably saw the M1a’s being stored for scrapping at Frontier industries scrap site, the reporting marks are added as commuter cars do not carry reporting marks in general. believe the frontier markings FICX are added before car number.
the mu cars are easely recognized by the 2 x double door vestibules at 1/4 points of car
