High-ranking government officials form Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq met on Saturday to discuss a joint railway project that would link the three countries. Jordanian Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour met with Egypt’s Transportation Minister Ibrahim Demeiri and Iraq’s Transportation Minister Salman Jassim, Petra news agency reported.

Ensour explained how important the railway project is as it links the countries of the Levant with North Africa, increasing trade and the economic interests of Arab countries. Jordanian Transportation Minister Lina Shabib, Egyptian Ambassador to Jordan Khaled Tharwat and Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan Jawad Abbas also attended the meeting, the report said.

I opened the link about the Egypt-Iraq RR, but I didn’t see in in the first 3 pages. Are they going to connect Egypt-Jordan thru Isreal, or are they going to tunnel/ferry the Gulf of Aqaba?

Mike, I mentioned that here: http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/229001.aspx

Dave, can you consolidate the threads?

Both Jordan and Egypt have peace treaties with Israel. I don’t know how to consolidate threads without more work than is worth at the moment.

That is okay, Dave. Everyone else, lets just post on this one to ease confusion.

I’m glad to hear that Israel is on board! Israel Railways hasn’t always been best of friends with Egyptian Railways (something about the captured EMD G12s), but I hope this promotes more cooperation among the railways in the area.
