Dinky TrainDollars for Dinky

A fund raising effort by the City of Beckley’s Parks and Recreation Department is underway to raise money to help restore the iconic Dinky Train that currently sits in New River Park.

Beckley’s little Dinky Train has true historical value. During the late 19th century and the early 20th century, smaller gauge track and trains were used to move people and freight short distances. The Dinky in New River Park was used to haul coal for the Crab Orchard Coal Company. More than forty years ago, when the mine closed, the locomotive was donated to the City and placed in the newly developed New River Park. Come to find out, most of these types of trains were scrapped and there just aren’t many of them around anymore.

Steamlocomotive.com says she’s a 36" gauge 0-4-0 saddletank engine, built by Vulcan in 1910. The smokebox is poking out from under the fat saddle tank. the stack appears to be missing.
