Near miss on Amherst railroad tracks

Exsperance dictates what we do…I Know what your saying and believe me your opinion is justified, But we do things differant because ( in this case) its amcrash people on board Now you think that its a huge mass and it rolls to a stop But It is no differant than a car when you plug it after the brakes set up it throws you forward til it stops your pinned forward, now plugging a train is a roll of the dice because it can derail but with amtrack you have passengers to consider also so to plug it means your putting alot of people at risk of injury, So think about this if I plugged my train my conductor would be on the ground and getting names to cover my but and his. And being there was nobody hit the delay has to be justified, and dispatchers watch that close on amtrak.

So to sum it up I think its a fake anyways due to the cut and paste the crew never got off the train. Most amtrak engineers are ole head guys not the kind that would throw it in emergency because they about hit a dog. or in this case a girl, and if i did something like this and the train came to a stop knowing i ma

The freight units usually didn’t have one, but the passenger units (E8, F7) did. It was back in the engine room. A really dumb place to put it, if you ask me. And every time I tried to steer, one of the wheels would begin to slide.

Not so bad when just riding, but climbing up and down into the cab might be a unsettling experience for those on the ground.

I’m a rail fan, and would never DREAM of doing such a stupid deed.[:(!] I really do hope that this stupid chick goes to jail with a hefty fine out for her. I wish the engineer and her could have a word. That would be a real learning experience. Maby a little harsh, but that is just stupid… Plain stupid…[soapbox]

Assuming this video is legitimate…{I believe it is…}, with the girl making a dash {on purpose}, to cross in front of the speeding engine…What does your written instructions tell {an engineer}, how to react…in regard to applying brakes and whether to stop…and even try to get any names of witnesses…Of Course, question to railroader, engineer, etc…

There is no written instructions common sense tells you dont worry they wont be there when you get there and truthfully after all these years I dont even react i just keep running the engine. But look close real close, go slow and check out everything. everyone has their attention pasted on the girl, there is at least 3 other cuts in the film, but as someone pointed out the train stopped to quick and i agree and maybe found out why, to many wrongs on this video (but its for entertainment anyways) the scanner keeps talking #79 rear unit and film says #55 lead unit is 128 or something like that amtrak does use engine as train number. 2nd and most important why didnt they come after this girl because it was not that close that train was in emergency before he got there. look at film close on left just before she gets on crossing a car enters the pic from left at crossing before the one the girl is on, and is going fairly quick that car is not there after train clears or crosses this may have been the near miss they shot them for. at this time there is a blip in the film also then the girl was picking a flower and it got cut again and then the one with the sun or light differance very noticable. lots of cuts in film no its not real , But a word of advise to anyone in this situation where a train is comming and you are right there like he is he should be back father or on the other side of crossing as if they would have hit a car it could have even got him. and death would have been the out come. but he would have went d

Absolutely correct. Most non-railroaders do not realize just how far a vehicle struck at a crossing can be launched by a high-speed impact; same goes for a human body, except they can be launched a greater distance. Granted, the angle of impact has to be ‘just’ right for a launching, but it does happen.

Maybe a railfan in Amherst can check the speed posting at that section of track. Amtrak is running on New England Central (formally Central Vermont) freight track north of Palmer MA and into Vermont.

Note:

  1. That the movie camera is set up at a local Cafe next to the track.

  2. It looks like the photographer ran a short test run (red truck at crossing) and then turned it back on when he saw or heard the train blowing for the crossing.

  3. You have two crossings one block apart, see truck crossing in the distance.

  4. No gates, just flashers.

  5. The girl steps on the track 4 seconds before the locomotive reaches the crossing, The engineer had 352 feet at 60mph (88 ft per sec), or 264 feet at 45 mph (66 ft per sec) to decide if to try a stop.

For those who did not go to the You Tube site, here is the link with some comments by the photographer.

I am sure members of the Amherst Railway Society in Amherst are discussing it. Amherst MA is a popular place for train watching for locals. There is a station in Amherst that I think is still used. I know a couple members are in one of these forums.

Amherst, MA is on CSX. Track speed in Palmer, MA (several miles east of Amherst) is 60 for passenger trains and 55 for freights, so it is most likely that it’s also 60 here.

The clip in the beginning (with the red pickup vanishing) was cut out to save viewers’ time. There was most likely no action between the horn and the lights activating. I film quite a bit, and I experience that delay a lot.

I’m also pretty confident the clip is real. It looks much to real to be created from scratch by anybody but a CGI (Computer Generated Image) expert. And there’s no way that is possible to create that by cutting and pasting clips and dubbing sound without a Green Screen. In addition, I know the videographer (we met once while railfanning) and have watched a lot of his videos. He’s probably one of the last railfans I’d expect to create something like this.

I was surprised someone would think the video is not real. There is a description of what happened in the newspaper article. Would be tough to post a false newspaper article.

The You Tube video has comments by the photographer who had to talk to the Man about the incident.

But then, some people believe the NASA never sent people to the moon.

Amherst (pronounced 'Amerst" in MA) is not on CSX but on New England Central or whatever the name of the company now operating the former Central Vermont north from Palmer, MA.

Well all I can say is that there is 2 engineers on here that hae been telling you that things dont happen like this in the real world, there is to many cuts in the film to be any good. and to tell me the girl was on the track for 4 sec of film well this is true at least the version your looking at, the timer is running for the film now not what was edited. I am not going to argue with anyone else on here about the film its a fake and take it for a learning or tech tape only.

Amherst is on NECR (New England Central Railroad)? I never looked it up, but since, two days later, the consist had been turned (which is not a regular event on a train that has a loco at each end), I assumed it would be a southbound on CSX. If 108 had been leading on the 24th southbound on CSX, and trailing two days later southbound on NECR in White River Jct (I can personally vouch for that - I was there!), that would seem to be evidence of the reversing movement in Palmer, which is the reason for two locos.

I suppose the train could have been turned in two days, but it didn’t seem likely to me…too big of a coincidence to happen while a twice-daily (NB and SB trains) reverse movement would explain the same thing.

On another note: I’m not going to get into “real or fake” but I will point out that the user Skyman2002 has several videos of Amtrak and NECR from the same location (with no collision) so I don’t think it’s a training tape that he found and uploaded…

I don’t think the engineer could see if he did or didn’t hit the individual from the cab window.

Furthermore, the braking systems on this Amtrak train function rather differently than they do on a freight train.

The “Vermonter” comes up from New York to New Haven, Hartford and Springfield on Metro North, then ConnDOT, then Amtrak owned tracks. The tracks north of Springfield (Guilford) to Bellows Falls is in such poor condition that the “Vermonter” makes a backing move over the CSX from Springfield to Palmer MA. Then back forward again northbound to Vermont on the New England Central. Go figure!

NEC (formally Central Vermont div. of Canadian National Railways) (now part of RailAmerica) runs south from the Canadian border near St Albins to Essex Junction, to Montpeiler Junction, to White River Junction, to Bellows Falls, to Amherst MA, Palmer MA, to Willimantic CT and reaching the Atlantic Ocean at New London CT.

The air used on Amtrak trains is partially federally funded. The nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide is supplied by the funding; It is up to the states in which it operates to come up with the oxygen to mix with to create the special “Amtrak Air”.

Due to the fact that the majority of “Amtrak Air” is from the government, it contains considerably more hot air than conventional air, thus it is lighter (as you surmised).

But Zardosz, you overlooked the proper terminology: Amtrak air is politically charged which means it can either be very powerful or not powerful at all, and therefore its effectiveness, among things, is always suspect.

after thinking about what i said I must give a apology for the way i said it it could have been smoothed over alittle more, Im not saying Im sorry for what i said just the way i said it. But it seems like some others are having fun with it… well i haft to go now my dash 9 quit running again. some day ill get a real engine a sd70

Try the term “Blended Breaking” and try all disc brakes on locomotive and all cars, try little or no slack in the train.

Don’s post is the actual useful information that I was referring to. The braking speed of the Amtrak train in the video is incredible and that’s by design.

Well, the moderator did edit and delete posts without anyone asking them to do it. I don’t care how much you think you know, or how much you think I don’t know, I just want to learn as much as I can about it.
