Okay, I had to try it as it was finally released a couple days ago. But it seriously affected the interface with these forums.
The text box for writing posts and replies was about 40 percent the size (width) of this one. Gone was the ability to change fonts and sizes and colors and add smileys.
Worse was trying to reply with a quote. Instead of putting the quote in a box, it posted it as a run-in with all of the commands visible. You’ve seen other posts like that here, and they’re unreadable.
All this cleared up when I reverted to IE 6.0.
My guess is the software for these forums needs to be updated to mesh with IE 7.0. I’ll wait until Bergie gives us the high sign.
And no, I don’t want to use Mozilla or FireFox or ArmPit or any of the others, I’ll thank you all in advance.
Security flaw found in new Internet Explorer web browser

CBC News
In a blow to Microsoft Corp., a Danish security company on Thursday reported a vulnerability in the software giant’s newly released web browser that could let an attacker gain access to documents over the internet.
“A vulnerability has been discovered in Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information,” Secunia said in an advisory on its website.
No repair is yet available for the flaw, which Secunia rated as “less critical” — the second-least-serious on the company’s five-point threat-rating scale.
Microsoft late on Wednesday released Internet Explorer 7, touting its security features as a key element of its first major upgrade in years.
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THAT MICROSOFT CAN’T GET THEIR $HIT RIGHT. THEY COME OUT WITH A NEW PROGRAM. AND THE NEXT DAY. IT DOESN’T WORK AT ALL.
Hey, microsoft has their faults, but lets not go overboard. The reports dont say it doesnt work, just that it doesnt work well in this forum.
My biggest complaint is their habit of disguising a beta release as a polished program, and putting it out there for the public to do the testing. Even after the testing they seem to have lots of errors.
Havng recently switched to FireFox, I am also amused that MS is so excited about “Tabs” in IE 7.
Wonder if they have tried to buy Mozilla yet, to shut off the competition…
ABSO~FREAKING~LUTELY!! I just hope that when bergie gets around to updating the forums for IE7, that it doesn’t ruin it for the rest of us.
MS has a bad habit of sneaking proprietary operability in under the door by masquereding it as “feature enhancment” when the real goal is to break functionality for non windows users
On another forum I am on, this was posted about this issue:
From a MS employee:
Quote
Some people are discussing a recently announced security vulnerability that they claim is found in Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP SP2 systems.
While it is true that a vulnerability exists, the vulnerability is not actually in any components of IE7, although the attack vector makes it appear that way. Our friends at the MSRC have the issue under investigation and have posted a blog entry with more details on which component is affected and what you should do about it.
So, if it is not with IE7, then is it in the OS itself?
Tab’ed browsing first appeared in Opera at least a couple of years before it was incorporated into Mozilla and FireFox. What is particularly frustrating about IE-7.0 is that MS still hasn’t provided full support for W3C standards such a CSS (cascading style sheets).
What’s funny is that for a while, there were quite a few websites that wouldn’t work (or worked poorly) with anything but IE - now there are increasing number of sites that work better with FireFox than IE.
Because I asked someone if it where ok to un-install IE6 now 7. And I was told no. Even though I only use Firefox. There is no need for IE7. So what do I do? I already use Firefox. Do I still keep IE7? Or can I un-install it?
Yeah. Just uninstall it. But you will not find it listed if you try to go the “Control Panel” – “Add or Remove Programs…” route.
So… Use “Start” to get to “All Programs.” Look for IE 7 and there will be a tabbed option to uninstall. It will do so cleanly and revert to IE 6.0. That’s what I did, and the Trains forums came right back they way they were.
Based on many years of experience with computers of all types, my rule is to never install the first release of anything from any vendor unless there is a very specific reason to do so. I wait for the 1st, or better yet 2nd maintenance release and let ‘you guys’ do the testing.
FWIW - Last week’s set of Microsoft critical updates included Hotfix KB923191 which is causing a number of problems on certain W2K and XP Pro systems, ranging from slow shutdowns, roaming profiles not being saved, to not installing at all on some XP systems. A Google Groups search will turn up some of the problems. Event Viewer will show if it installed. As of this morning there’s no fix for the fix yet. This may or may not be related to problems with IE7.
“Do not be afraid to leave the DARSIDE father” said Luke to Darth Vader. I wonder why anyone would use IE at all. Microsoft has not released a new opperating system since XP. Bugs. Bugs, Bugs. My girlfriend refuses to leave MS so I got her a I-MAC that runs Windows and OSX.
Poppa_Zit, According to Microsoft many websites take advantage of “quirks” in IE 6.0 to do certain things. Since Microsoft removed those “quirks” in IE 7.0, that’s why some sites don’t render correctly anymore. Hopefully, one of the board admins will fix the problem so everything displays correctly in IE 7.0 soon.
