I saw these old Budd MUs at Metro-Norths shops in Corton Harmon but the shop staff couldn’t give me much infomation about them. Does anybody know anything about them?

If they were stainless steel mu’s, probably still with the blue stripe under the window line, they were the original M1 modern mu cars that came on line around 1971, after the first deliveries were made to the Long Island Rail Road, which got their first ones about 1969. They are being replaced by M-7’s? (I think I got the type right) with up-to-date motors and controls and more reliable air-conditioning, etc. Many M-1’s are still in service on both railroads and will continue for a while. Those taken out of service are the ones needing repairs or major overhauls. I’m assuming these are out of service, and not just awaiting repairs. Until very recently, Metro North was still using the Port Authority purchased “AC-MU” cars, built earlier by Pullman, with the usual end vestibules and traps and steps, not like the Budd mu’s and all since which have quarter-point sliding doors and can be used with high-level platforms only. There were about 20 or 30 of the :AC-MU" fleet still in standby service until several months ago. Jim Swanberg is the expert on this, and possibly he reads this thread and can supply more informaiton.
