PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD THREAD FOR EVERYBODY!!!!!!

This thread is parts of CONRAIL. Post anything and everything about PENNSYLVAINA railroad. This thread is for PENNSYLVAINA railfans, lovers and non railfans, lovers. Enjoy this thread???

I love the Pennsylvania Railroad! I have been a fan of GG1s ever since I saw pictures of them in railroad books I checked out of the library as a child.I saw GG1s on a family vacation in 1967,and rode behind GG1s in 1978.My favorite PRR.steam engine is the K4s.

Yeah, I love Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives too!

I love pennsylvania railroad’s F UNITS and GP7,8,9 engines.

There’s also the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society www.prrths.com They have a forum that you can get into through the Philadelphia Chapter Link.

HELK who didn’t love the Pennsylvania railroad!!!

My chapter RNRHS or www.rgvrrm.org has EX- ALCO LHV,PENNSYLVANIA,CONRAIL now LHV 211. What you do is go to the bottom of the page where it is says see more. On the left side their is a list to choices from this EX-PENNSYVANIA.

Some poor misguided New York Central fans.

I wish they’d restore a GG1 to operating condition. Out here on Long Island we have the last to G5s. LIRR was once a PRR subsidiary so it got a lot of PRR locos including K4s, E6sand even DD1s.

the PA RR was a good railroad. what reminds me of it the most is the famous horseshoe curve. and when it had 4 tracks in it. how many does it have now? and does CSXT or NS operate that track? i know when Conrail took over, the curve became a 3-track curve

NS has it now.

How many GP engines did PENNSYLVANIA railroad have???

As a general rule, the answer to any question, “How many____did the Pennsy have?” is a lot. I seem to recall that the rule of thumb was that PRR had 10%-of locos, freight & passenger cars, traffic, employees and revenues of US railroads. Of course much of this would vary from time to time but no two ways about it, Pennsy was BIG. Four tracks across the Alleghenies, six from Trenton to New York, hundreds of miles of electrification, the massive Penn Station/Hell Gate project, engine classes numbering in the hundreds, an unmatched record of dividends…PRR was a road of superlatives. The Standard Railroad of the Railway Age; we will not see the likes of it again.

I never saw any of it so a lot is softened by being secondhand history but I have been an unabashed fan of the PRR for as long as I can recall. No doubt DPM had a lot to do with it-I don’t think he ever penned an article that didn’t speak of Pennsy without a sense of awe and wonder. Even when he referred (recalling his days as a young L&N fan) to the Pennsy as “our nemesis”, it was still with a tone of respect. Who else would or could have spent the decades and millions to build such magnificent stations at New York City, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington? Granted, Pittsburgh seemed a disappointment but perhaps in the Steel City there was no time for fancy, there was too much work to be done. Even in Chicago, even though PRR could not claim an exclusive terminus, it owned a full half of Union Station.

Look forward to reading anyone’s stories here of the Standard Railroad of the World.

The Pennsy was alright I like it…but it doesn’t hold a candle to the New Haven. Size does not matter.

Of the things Kevin mentioned, the Hell Gate bridge was on the New York Connecting Railroad – a joint New Haven-PRR company. And those hundreds miles of electrification, came after the New Haven began its 11000vAC catenary project on its mainline - the PRR followed suit. And where did the base for the GG1 come from? A New Haven EP3 that the New Haven loaned to PRR for testing (two units I think)…

Then we have all the run through trains…PRR cars in Boston, New Haven cars in Washington, the railroads co-existed…the Congressional, the Senator, the Federal just to name a few, all ran Boston-Washington behind NH steam, diesel, (Bos-NH) and electric over the years and behind PRR electric.

Standard Railroad of the World? Sure…but it owes its popularity to the New Haven for the electrified mains, GG’s, and run through trains…

Horseshoe Curve is still three tracks wide, operated by the NS. The main reason Conrail took out one track was clearance problems. The curve is a very tight radius at the actual horseshoe and before they removed it (they took out the second track from the inside) they were restricted from having trains meet or pass on adjacent tracks in the curve on the first three tracks (counting from the inside of the curve). Taking out that track removed a real operational headache.

As I understand it, the biggest expense in restoring a GG-1 to operation would be draining, flushing, and disposing of the oil in the transformers (that PCB thing). Then when you’re finished restoring it, you’d run into the other problem of where to run it. How receptive would Amtrak or the commuter agencies be to hosting excursions?

Did the PENNSYLANIA railroad the first to get GP15-1 engines???

PRR was long gone by the time the GP15 came out.

Bert

Did pennsy have SW100 engines???

…Just a few days ago I visited the Johnstown, Pa. area. I most always visit the Incline Plane when there and did so again. One reason is to look out over the Johnstown valley that includes the route of former Pennsylvania 4 track main line. In general I always see trains passing through on it…but now it’s owned and operated by NS. I still watch.

One can see the former Pennsy station down in the city and now an Amtrak stop.

During WWII it was normal to witness several trains passing in one view…A massive busy place.

Rode behind GGI’s {beyond Harrisburg}, and did they ever move out after a station stop. Set one almost back in your seat when they started forward. Quite a difference from the K4’s just removed.

Did get to see first hand the massive and awesome Penn Station in NYC…What a cathedral like setting…Just awesome…! What a shame it was lost.

Just some thoughts on the Pennsy…my [2c]
