President Washington

Hi everyone,

I forgot where I saw it but now I cant find it…a Lionel engine called the President Washington. I liked it and had decided it to add it to my “wish list”, lol. I know it was off of Google soemwhere but for the life of me now I cant find it.

Anyways I was wondering if someone could give me a little bit of a background on this engine? Thank you,

PJ

I think it’s the last 2006 Lionel catalog or early 2007. Lionel posts their recent catalogs online.

Good Luck.

I think there was also an American Flyer set, I could be wrong, called the Presidential set.

Thanks, John

Chesapeake & Ohio F-19 4-6-2 Pacific #494 The George Washington
In 1932, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway introduced its premier Pullman train, The George Washington. It commemorated the 200th anniversary of our first president’s birth, who as St. James River Canal Company honorary president had direct lineage to the C&O. Advertised as “The Most Wonderful Train in the World” and pulled by a Class F-19 4-6-2 Pacific, this was the world’s first air-conditioned train. Operating over the 599 miles between Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio, it set a new standard for excellence.
Born at the depth of the Great Depression, “The George,” as it became known, featured Hepplewhite and Duncan Fyffe furnishings reminiscent of colonial times. It soon became one of the most highly regarded U.S. passenger trains. Relive those glory days of high-speed mainline steam by adding The George to your passenger fleet. Heavyweight passenger cars are available separately.

If memory serves me correctly there was an earlier Lionel model, either 4-6-2 or 4-6-4 arrangement, in “O” gauge. If you are referring to the older model they show up on E-Bay fairly regularly, if you mean the new model prepare to secure a second mortgage to pay for it.[sigh]

A 4-6-2 Pacific for B&O in the Presidential paint scheme was done back in 2001. It was the President Polk.

Chuck,

Didn’t Lionel do one( Washington) for Penney’s, in traditional B&O colors, and one in green, the Pres Polk version, for general sales ? [%-)]

President Polk was one of the early scale Odyssey offerings and was done in the later B&O paint scheme, aka blue and silver. I sort of remember some controversy re this series of engines and the placement of the bell. Photo’s of various president engines had the bell all over the place so I don’t know if any one of them is “correct”.

The ‘George Washington’ was a F-19 Pacific done for Chesepeake and Ohio, not B&O or Pennsy.

The ENTIRE set is available on EBay right now…

I think you can beat this by a lot if you go to Trainworld, Grand Central, or Gybroskis .

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the replies, but the above mentioned engine is not the one I saw. The one I saw was much cheaper, and it was green, not black. I’m thumbing through my 2007 catalog now. Thanks again,

PJ

I think this green one you mention is what I am looking for.

Skullie, the style of engine you are inquiring about is the B&O Class P-7 Pacific. There is an example still in existance at the B&O RR Museum in Baltimore. You weren’t seeing things, someone (Ithink LIONEL) cataloged one a while back.

Hello Skullie! I think the engine you are referring to was made by Lionel in 1994 & the Smokebox was Charcoal Grey & the rest of the engine & tender was green with gold lettering & numbers also. It used the 2055 casting & had a Pullmore with Magne-Traction & a Motorized Whistle in the Tender. The tender is the same style as the old 2466/6466 type Tenders. A set of matching passenger cars (Baby Madisons) were offered as well for this engine & it had a 4-6-2 wheel arraingment. Try Joe Gryzboski in Scranton,Pa as he carries new old stock Lionel from the 70s-90s as well as the new product line. His ad is in every CTT. Take Care.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like one I might not find.

Hello Skullie! Don’t give up. Grand Central in Lincoln,Nebraska may have one in stock also & then there are Auction Houses & ebay as other alternatives as well. you have plenty of options to work with here. Take Care.
