At a guess, this picture was taken near the north end of the station in late afternoon, looking eastward from the Manhattan el tracks to the NYC platform. I looked up this engine in the Edson & May book on NYC engines. Number 1130, class C-7 – noted on Page 54. Interesting is that this engine is noted as being retired in 1909. Since there seems to be third rail on the Manhattan track, the date of the picture is probably bracketed between 1902 and 1909. At that time, the 155 St station had two island platforms.
