Railroad Historical Societies EDITED & UPDATED

See above.

A good way to answer your questions. Also a yearly convention. We own the
GN " Hustle Mustle " SD-45 diesel that pulls our excursion trains. We also get
to drive it at our conventions. What a hoot !

Ray ---- Great Northern fan.

  1. You have only listed a few of the societies, I belong to two that aren’t even listed (Anthracite Railroads Historical Society and Reading Company Technical and Historical Society).

  2. You have mispelled or have typos in at least 4 of the railroads above.

  3. This is part of why I don’t care for polls on these forums, because the polls are so poorly written. The premise of the poll is “Do you belong to a railroad historical organization?” which is a yes/no question. But the poll isn’t built to support those answers. It doesn’t even allow a “NO” response, or a “Yes, but one not listed” response. So what we have is not really a poll at all or at least the “results” won’t tell you anything even vaguely useful or informative.

Yes, the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Society. http://www.maparailroadhist.org/ There’s a quarterly magazine and they have developed some other publications on the Ma&Pa.
Enjoy

If you were going to list the societies, you might have done a little more homework. I have belonged to the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society, Penn Central society and the Monon society in the past as well as the NYCSHS. Retirement has forced me to reduce the number of societies that I support. Yes, support. It is not merely a matter of what I get, but supporting those who share something that I am interested in. As the New York Central holds my most interest, I have stayed with that. A decent magazine (sharing information) and preserving a heritage is important to me.

And, no, I didn’t take the time to get the exact name of the societies.

The historical society for the CHICAGO, ROCK ISALND & PACIFIC railroad is the ROCK ISLAND TECHNICAL SOCIETY (RITS). There is the quarterly newsletter THE ROCK, the highlight of which (to me) is Steve Hile’s “Speaking of Models” section. There is also the DIGEST, a professionally done annual journal. They have falled a bit behind in the publicaiton (the 1999 Digest was published in 2004!), but the new officers are working hard to correct this.

There are also local section meetings, as well as the national ones.

The RITS also has a website,

http://storm.simpson.edu/~RITS/

and the RITS DISCUSSION LIST:

http://www.simpson.edu/mjdomo.archives/rits/.

I see a lot of critcism of this poll
some crucial options of a pole:
-Yes, but of one not listed
-No
And then the other more specific options

I belong to the Burlington Route Historical Soc. Superb publications are produced, worth far more than the membership IMO.

To all who responded,

My purpose of this poll was to get other forum members, especially the younger ones,
to get interested in the HISTORICAL SOCIETIES and join and support them as a source of information and a way to meet other people interested in TRAINS. Sort of what WORLDS GREATEST HOBBY is trying to do.

Sorry if I’m not perfect. This was my first try at a poll. Done at 1 A.M. I knew there were
more societies than the 15 slots they give you in listing. If I wanted such negative
comments, I could have stayed at work. This is supposed to be a FUN place to share
information and thoughts. NOT a place to belittle or drag someone down. If you can’t
offer positive information, DON’T OFFER ANY. Maybe this is why the model railroading
community is having a difficult time attracting or keeping members. YOU THINK ?

By the way, I’m 63 years young and enjoy passing on any info I can to young people.
How else can they learn ?

Your response to these comments ?

Ray ---- Great Northern fan.

I belong to the Pere Marquette and Chesepeake & Ohio historical societys.

Ray, don’t sweat it and thanks for the poll. Although I do not belong to a historical society, I have been contemplating doing so and joining Southern’s. I am curious as to how many on this forum are members.

I believe you can modify your poll to include a No or Not Listed.

[:)] REX [:)]

REXHEA,

Thanks for your support. I will try a different way to drum up interest in the SOCIETIES.
I would highly recommend you join the one of your choice. Just the info avaliable is
worth the price of addmission. We need to keep these active so each generation can
have access and learn while having fun. I think history taught in most schools today
is not as good as when you or I went to grade and high school. To many things changed to be " politically correct " I think. Also not enough detail or encouragement
to research beyound school textbooks. I ran my own industrial business for 24 years
and I was amazed at what the " high school graduates " did not know. Very sad.
The pictures of your layout are excellant. You do nice work.

I belong to the Southern Pacific Historical&Technical Society,as well as the Feather River Rail Society, which is the WP society, and owns the Portola Railroad Museum.

Hi were do you find out about joining the Great Northen Society. I am a GN,NP and S.P.&S Fan

Joining the CNWHS has totally broadened my knowledge of the railroad I love, and becoming active has increased my base of railfan aquaintances and friends.

Thanks for the inquiry.

I belong to the COTTON BELT Rail Historical Society (CBRHS). The CBRHS has a quarterly publication “The Star” and operates the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff Arkansas. You can check out the CBRHS and Arkansas Railroad Museum online at http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/8199/ or stop by the Museum Monday through Saturday from 9-3.

Now for the news. The wife & I were in Pine Bluff earlier this month. My hat is off to the folks in Pine Bluff who run the museum. Special thanks to Ernie Meiggs, Bill McCaskill, Marian Scoggins, Bob McClanahan, Clayton Thurman and Elizabeth Gaines. A friendly hello to Blue Streak the cat, she puts up with a lot. The war baby needs new flues. The 336 is to be restored cosmetically when time allows. The big gator and little gator will be painted in their original colors. The Cartier C-630 is still in Houston. The little blue tonner is almost ready for a test run. The GP30 looks great as do several other Cotton Belt pieces at the Museum. The new clean room is a must see and may be expanded.

Thanks again to Bill McCaskill for showing me the Gravity of the situation. Pine Bluff Rocks!

To answer the question, yes, for the past 15 years, I have belonged to the New Haven Railroad Historical & Technical Association (NHRHTA), the very first one-railroad Special Interest Groug (SIG), as all others up to that time were regional groups like the RRE and NRHS.

Formed in 1961, the NHRHTA (known at various times as the “New Haven MODEL Railroad” & “New Haven Railroad Technical Infomation Group/Association”) has produced a quartely color magazine called the “Shoreliner” for the past 30 years or so, and also makes a few Newsletters/Bulletins per year. We have a website and discussion forum at www.nhrhta.org And we also have two show crews in southern New England that each staff 10 or more train shows a year.

The NHRHTA does not have a museum, nor a library of any sort. In fact, there is no centralized meeting place at all. However, the New Haven’s documents and the NHRHTA’s collections that are received go to UCONN at Storrs, CT, a high class research department on campus. http://railroads.uconn.edu/

Instead of collecting equipment or other items, the NHRHTA prefers to collect and distribute information. There are 5 railroad musuems in CT and MA combined, so it’s not like the New Haven is unrepresented in preservation.

As far as the set up of this thread, I agree that while the idea was good, the execution was not. Like it or lump it, one’s presentation to the internet is only expressed by one’s grammer skills. Simple typos are easily ignored, but mispelling 4 different RR names in one post…?

What I find most illuminating about this was the response. Not, “Gee, I’m sorry, let me fix/improve my poll”, but instead, “If I wanted such negative comments, I could have stayed at work.” I guess nobody’s allowed to offer any constructive criticism…

Weather Or No Go New Haven

I, too am a GNRHS member,Ray.
I’ll be in Fergus Falls in July.
See you there.

Hi ray don’t sweat the disparagers i don’t spell well either but your is an important topic. Getting tthe young and old alike involved in the many historical societies(yes there are too many to adequatly mention) is important. actually belong to two. The Ontario Electric Railway Historical Society (OERHA)which can be contacted through our Museum’s web site. http://www.hcry.org We own operate and restore historical electric railway equipment. Streetcars, intuerurban’s work equipment and locomotives.Membership gets you the 6 times a year newsletter (“The Radial Report”) and the ability to learn to run and restore the equipment at Rockwood.I also belong to the bytown railway society which is a general Canadian railway group which publishes branchline magazine and many books. Good topic BTW it’s nice to see allot of modellers that are active with one to one groups as well. Rob
