Rio Grande and the NYC

I just recently bought the 1976 version of trains the magazine and the main article talks about the NYC borrowing this locomotive because at the time they where having trouble with there F3 units. Can someone tell me what where some of the problems with the F3 units the NYC was facing and also a little back ground history on the krauss maffei diesel-hydraulic locomitives. There one of the most interesting looking locomotives I’ve seen and became really interested in them so any information would help, thanks.[:D]

There were previous postings on the diesel hydraulics and you might search through the back pages and find all the information you may want. Both SPO and D&RGW.

Whatever problems the NYC had with the F3’s, they were solved with the F7’s.

Three KMs had the same tractive effort as 8 F units.

Some history is here http://espee.railfan.net/spml4000.html .
