Just fooling around on google earth, and decided to zoom down to my old home town of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, a very large railway facility in the prairies, I tried to remember some old railway lines as a kid that are now abandoned, the tracks are gone in most places and in other areas there is no evidence of there ever having been track there. ( actually there is a lot of abandoned track around the area)This was great fun and sure brought back a lot of memories of @ 50 years ago, also is that really a 6 engine, 130 car grain train directly behind the train station?? and you can still see the turntable, Moose Jaw is is a divisional point on the C.P.R. mainline and home to the heavy haul shops.
Hi tatans,
I’m down in Halifax, NS…and yes Google Earth can be a bit of fun finding some RR stuff.
So when a Newfie calls you a “flatlander” what do you call him? [:D]
…Using the satellite system, either TeraServer or Google it is fun to zoom down to where you can find old railroad grades…I’ve done it many times. Have followed the abandoned WM RR grade from Meyersdale, Pa. all the way to Cumberland, Md…over the Allegheny Mt. range…Took me about an hour and a half to do it…
In most cases, it doesn’t matter how long ago it was abandoned you can pick out the ROW from the satellite photos…We have an old B&O branch line over in south western Pennsylvania {near my home}, that had 4-horseshoe curves almost end to end and it was abandoned about 60 years ago and it can still be picked out very easy. If interested, start at Friedens, Pa. and and go about 1 1/2 miles north west and try to pick it out and follow it…
