Scenes we try not to model

  1. Fire

  2. Flood

  3. Derailments

  4. Plasticville people on strike

  5. Riots

  6. RR line abandonments

  7. Command boards frying

  8. Engine smokestacks shooting flames

  9. Tornado

  10. Earthquake

  11. Blizzards

  12. Drought

  13. Hurricane

  14. Volcano eruptions.

Engines shooting flames out the stacks is something I want to model.

Riots are unavoidable when purchasing an engine over $500.

Plasticville people strikes are unavoidable when buying a GE diesel.

When I read that I was like ‘Whoa wait a minute… that would be wicked awesome cool!’ Now who has the YouTube video book marked where there were attaching model rockets to train cars?

Fire - Doesn’t MTH or someone have a model house on fire complete with flames, smoke, and a fire fighting crew?

Flood - well probably not intentionally - although there was that interesting effect that the broken hot water heater had on the layout awhile back…

Derailments - this isn’t a modeling issue this is an occasional fact of life when running the trains.

Plasticville people on strike - I don’t know about yours but everytime I visit my layout they sure seem to be on strike - at least they haven’t moved from where I last saw them when I turned on the lights.

Riots - oh yes we do - as mentioned above - and there is the derivative - getting read the riot act - for exactly the same reason!

RR line abandonments - I do this every night when I turn off the power and shut of the train room lights.

Command boards frying - what’s to model - from time to time this has a nasty habit of being the reality of the train room.

Blizzards - I have a few friends whose layouts are deep snow winter scenes

Drought - Same thing - one or two with a desert setting for their layout

Tornado, Earthquake - obviously there are no little kids allowed in your train room.

Engine smokestacks shooting flame - ditto -that would be a real eyecatching effect

Hurricanes and Volcano eruptions - it might be tempting but waterproofing all of the electrical components would be a huge chore and I don’t have enough room on the layout to properly model a volcano - or even a small mountain range for that matter.

Boyd,

You mean mean I can’t model realistic south Florida? This is hurricane alley in the summer down here. Modeling the actual hurricane would be hard but the after hurricane effects wouldn’t be all that hard to do, just smash a few old buildings & take off half the roof and cut off some trees and beat up some model cars and put one upside down on another one or a car sticking out of a building’s window.

A couple of things I don’t want to model are; a switch yard, cemetery(for me, too morbid).

If you are going to model flames out the stack, it must be an alco… Just kidding. Not sure I’d want to see that, especially if I don’t have fireproof tunnels.

  1. Derailments - I seem to model these regularly.

  2. Plasticville people on strike - my pike is too unpopulated as yet - along with a strange disconnect between figures sized from HO through G

  3. RR line abandonments - I remember an April issue of MR that featured No-Trak modules. Always wanted to do one. Hmmm. I have a tunnel that is untracked.

  4. Engine smokestacks shooting flames - now This is something that calls to be modelled.

  5. Tornado - there’s a neat overview of how they made that tornado whirl in the Wizard of Oz movie… Hmm, this gives me an idea.

  6. Blizzards - I’ve painted over the snow patches on my Dept 56-like buildings.

  7. Drought - happens whenever I run out of beer.

  8. Hurricane - whenever the cats visit.

  9. Volcano eruptions. - now This would be cool. I think there’s a Woodland Scenics diorama kit…

I love this forum!

Yea I try not to take realism to far, Thank goodness I haven’t seen a figure shooting up or a 1/48 scale crack pipe.

I have seen this happy slice o life

Armed robery play set, bank not included.

Granted if we wanted realism the bank robbers would get away.

Plasticville Union meeting

I’m still waiting for smoke fluid that burns black … [:P]

Is there an O scale model of someone breakdancing? Why do the little people have their feet stuck together?

How about cemeteries? Do any of you have one on your layout other than at Halloween?

I try and stay clear of the Gomez Adams method of operation. It’s bad enough when I find a newly installed cobweb with my face in the layout room…[xx(]

I don’t … but I’ve seen a couple family type small cemeteries added with fencing … they looked good . One guy even put his ex-wife’s name on one of the tombstones … real love huh … wishful thinking I guess … LOL ? And of course you can’t forget an outhouse …

An outhouse on the ex-wife’s grave site? Now that’s saying what you really feel!

A scene I probably shouldn’t have modeled! [:)]

But, I don’t do graffiti!!!

Jim

ALL OF THESE THINGS CAN AND WILL HAPPEN ON A GARDEN RAILWAY.

THAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN TWO OR MORE PEOPLE FIGHT OVER WHO GETS TO BE OPERATOR FOR THE DAY.

THATS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WIFE REFUSES TO APPROVE FUNDS FOR A NEW ENGINE.

Actually on the topic of Flood I have a actual pic that was sent to me that I think would be a great scene to model and its a flood seen

Outhouses?

Be careful what you drag out when you are done
