Evidently SEPTA also runs on this former PRR “Main Line” west of Philadelphia. Any locals know if it running on weekends? The website made it look like some of the other lines are closed for maintenance on the weekends, but it did not mention the “P5” out to Paoli.
And how is Paoli pronounced, anyway…POW-LEE? PAY-O-LEE?

R5 to Paoli seems to be running on the normal weekend schedule (for now)… and PAY-O-LEE looks to be about right for pronounciation
My son lives on the Glenside line & ir runs on weekends so I would suspect that all SEPTA lines have a weekend schedule including PAY-O-LEI[:D]
Well I did make it out there on Saturday (26th) and it sure is pronounced PAY-O-LEE. Only $8.50 round-trip from Phila 30th St. A BAH-gain! Some old PRR position light signals still in place…how many are left? And those SEPTA cars are really rough riding (or is it the track?).
Trains still run every 30 mins on Saturday, but there were all kinds of notices about threatened reductions in service due to funding cutbacks. And I have never before ridden a commuter service with so many stops…it resembles the LA-area light rail lines in how close the stations are.
It is the track and there is a program to rebuild it. During rush hours they have expresses and locals which speeds the commuters. The State came through with an emergency appropriation which doesn’t completely solve but postpones the problem. This is one of the very oldest electrified commuter operations in the country, preceding the extension to Harrisburg by about 24 years. And after the electriciation was extended from Trenton north through Penn Station to Sunnyside Yard, GG-1’s and P-5’s used to hand off trains to K-4’s at Paoli for a few year before moving the operation to Harrisburg.

In my youth I rode every day “under the wire” on the old Pennsy mainline from where the North Jersey Coast Line hit the mainline at Rahway. At the beginning the wire only extended to So. Amboy & the GG1 was changed there to diesel power for the rest of the trip south of SA. They the state extended the wire to Matawan so I used to get driven there to avoid the engine change. Then they further extended it to Long Branch so I could then hop on at my own stop. Finally they extended the line to Hoboken & as my offices were their my commuting life became real good. [:D]
Septa on weekends R5 train to malvern,pa. It makes stops all along the “mainline” as it is called, its a very rich area with private schools and such. On the weekdays the trains goes out to Coatsville I believe. It is a good train ride. Amtrak will get you to philly faster than the SEPTA but at a price. Its a scenic ride with many stops.
