Small Model Railroads

I just finished Eric’s article in the Aug MRR. I just wanted to add there are many ways to put up a small layout in a rental. Having rented apartments, like many others, I found an article in an old MRR about making a clamping system to hold a small layout between 2 walls without putting any holes in the walls. Currently my HOn3 Deepwater and Northern, based on David Popps Olympia, is free standing on legs and built in sections so if it needs to be moved out of my home office it can be. I am also making use of the space under my layout for book shelves and the area behind my desk for a 12in shelf to get the layout from one side of the room to the other.

Welcome to the forum, sidetracked625! We all enjoy seeing photos of layouts. I encourage you to post some photos on the next Weekend Photo Fun thread, which will begin this coming Friday. Thanks for posting!

Welcome to the forum! Yeah lets see your layout!

Welcome on board, sidetracked625.

I have seen a small model railroad in a caravan/mobile trailer
I had one on an ironing board

Having fun is the bottom-line in my books. One day, we will probably sell and will probably end up in a rental like you. I’m thinking a simple shelf, around the room track would be dooable. Please post some pics of your layout, I’m curious to see.

Eric and Tony’s columns were about the size, not the permanence of layouts. Tony said – A group of us were discussing layout planning, and someone mentioned that the magazines are “pushing large layouts”.

Eric mentioned careers involving frequent relocation and not living long enough in a house to build a layout. Both suggested small layout owners contacting the magazine

The British often have small apartments limiting the size of layouts and have come up with some clever approaches (see Baseboards)

Hello All,

Welcome sidetracked625 to these great forums!

Years ago, there was a thread asking about the viability of building a small layout in a roll-top desk.

While not being “portable” it would classify as a “small layout.”

Rolltop Desk for small layout?

Hope this helps.
