Amtrak delayed, man in hospital, following restroom fire
An unidentified man remained at University of New Mexico Hospital Sunday evening after apparently causing a methamphetamine-related fire.
The fire delayed the train for hours. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the fire, which broke out in a restroom aboard the train. The unidentified man was taken from the train on a stretcher with severe burns to his arms and hands.
“It’s a high possibility that there is possible narcotics involved and that’s what we’re still investigating,” said APD spokesperson Beth Hoffman Sunday.
Hannah Gerre, who was on her first train trip, said there was a lot of smoke in the train and “people running down the aisle yelling and talking about someone caught smoking in the bathroom and then he got burned.”
“The guy was caught having crystal meth so they’re gonna have, like, chemical substances in the air and people coming in with gas masks,” Gerre said. “They were announcing that to us on the train so we wouldn’t get freaked out, I guess.”
Police also detained a woman traveling with the injured man. Police say that they have turned the investigation over to Amtrak officials. - Reed Upton, KOB TV, Albuquerque NM, courtesy of Don Sharer
Hmmmm…almost as good as the 100 lb. girl I watched down 14 Heinekens on the train one night. It’s a good thing the bathrooms are so small on Amtrak. She could be on the toilet and puke into the sink without having to get up. It’s probably a good thing fire wasn’t involved with her…I’m not sure she would’ve realized that she was on fire she was so trashed…
Moron, got what he deserved…should hold off giving him the pain medication for the burns…possible drug interaction ya know? Let him lay there for about 2 or 3 days , just to make sure.
14 beers, I doubt she’d remember cause after that much alcohol there wont be any brain cells left to do any remembering.
14 beers - 100 lbs. Lucky she lived to tell about it… I found a calculator that would only go as high as 8 beers, but over two hours that would yield a BAC of .25…
She spaced it out over the course of an evening, so that’s a bit better than 2 hours, but I still couldn’t believe she packed away 14 of them away. Heinis aren’t exactly like downing Bud Lights, either. I weigh around 230, and I know I wouldn’t have felt very good after all that, and this girl was tiny…she might’ve been 105, but I’d doubt it…
I wonder if I will meet some one like that at the boarder (Amtrak Maple Leaf)-I guess there is one way to find out. If so, it will give me the ability to practice my arrest procedures so I don’t get rusty.[8D]
True enough, but even 14 in 6 hours would have put her BAC up around .20. The calculator was for just 8 in 2 hours.
I tried several on-line BAC calculators this time. Based on 14 beers over 6 hours at 105 lbs, the BAC ranged from .33 to .54. Obviously not an exact science, but, like I said, she’s lucky to be alive. Then again, some of that alcohol sounds like it didn’t stay down long…
True. I was actually kind of glad to see her stumble towards the bathroom (and believe me, with that state of intoxication and a train moving at 70+ mph, it was quite a stumble. Had she stayed in the car and passed out, I would have notified the conductor about it.
I still don’t understand that concept. Drinking to that point just doesn’t sound like much fun to me. Of course, going back to the original thread, smoking meth and setting oneself on fire seems to be in the same mindset. People are dumb creatures sometimes…
Cop, the BAC isn’t the most disturbing part of this girl’s plight…aren’t beers about $27.00 each on the springer express (Amtrak)? The fact that this person could afford this many golden beers baffles me.
Maybe not quite to that extreme…but certainly in the neighborhood. I usually grab a Cabernet Sauvignon and sip it as the train rolls through Eastern CO and Western NE, and then head off to get some sleep. Those usually run $8.00 if I remember correctly, so I’m sure the Heini’s are in the same neighborhood.
When she first came up from the Lounge with all of them, I was expecting her to share with her friends, but lo and behold, they were all for her. This was on one of my first CZ trips, so it was probably around 2000. I think Amtrak has since gotten a little more like stadiums in that they will only sell you 2 at a time. Gives the lounge attendants a chance to spot those who should probably not have any more.
