Some railpictures.net rejects part deux

Some railpictures.net rejects.

Second Pic

I gave up on railpictures a long time ago. if you want to share your pix I reccomend you post them on rrpicturearchives.[;)]

Been there, done that… You’ll notice where I post all my photos.

Chad; I beleive it’s really hard to get an account to post photos there… I’ve been waiting on my account for about a week now… Some friends have told me that it can take years if they even accept you.

HHP-8…Might be true, but I enjoyed seeing them.

[%-)] Really ? What is the problem?

I think that railpictures.net and RRpicture Archive have a goal of being 2 different things. Both of them fine, but different. Railpictures.net seems to be very particular in the screening and 90+% of the shots there are technically very good (exposure, framing, etc.) as well has have an interesting subject (rolling stock, location, etc.) Seems that they try to be a very high quality photo album. From what I’ve read here, their screeners are apparently though. However, when I look at their website, that scrutiny is reflected in the consistantly quite high quality of the photos there. Seems they must get a lot of submissions and can therefore be picky. Not to take away anything from your shots. They’re pretty good work. Maybe just a few things to take away from the feedback given, to use for next time. I used to enter rail photos in the NMRA meet contests. I’d get some good feedback and once in a while, something would win a ribbon. I used the feedback each time, and asked a friend who was also a good photog for feedback. Eventually I scored a couple best-in-show plaques. Took a thick skin to accept the critiques sometimes of what I thought was a pretty good shot. But the reviewer was usually right. One of the challenges is to divorce yourself from the good feelings of having been there when the shot was made from the cold/hard print itself. All of the context of the day, the trip, etc is lost. The image has to stand on its own for the viewer who wasn’t there, at your side.

RR Picture archive seems to be more of just that, an archive. I think that they trade off quality / interest of the shot for the archival value. That’s not to say that there aren’t good photos there. There are in fact very many. There are also however a pretty fair number of average or below average shots.

Frankly, there are a lot of things wrong with both photos…the first one is too dark, seems very grainy, and the sky is completely blown. The second one is blurry, and the fence is an absolute killer. The light isn’t too hot either, it’s what’s called high sun, that washes out the colours and casts nasty shadows.

I’m hoping that my old sig photo is lending a little credibility to myself as someone who knows what he’s talking about [;)]

Take a look at Railforums.com

…Bob…I tried, but nothing but red “X”.

I gave up on railpictures.net sometime ago as well. They can have their standards if they want, but you have other choices for posting.

Yea, go to archives and make every terrible shot of a boxcar a contributor’s pick. A joke.

Try going to http://www.railroadforums.com if you’d like to post your train photos.
