Southern Railway Bristol VA 1952

I shared these two pictures in the Classic Trains section, but thought some of the folks who visit this forum and don’t go to that one might be interested.

These are two pictures my dad took in Bristol VA in 1952.

I hope they are as fun to see for you as they were for me to find.

Great finds you got there, any images of Southern locos, rolling stock, structures, etc… will get me excited as I model the prototype.

Thanks,

Ryan

It’s amazing to see these older images. Keep 'em coming.

Is that a N&W J in the first picture??

It’s too far away to tell for sure. Could be a J, is probably a J actually, but could also be a streamlined K2 or K2A.

I looked at those pictures and my first impression was that those were “ancient” times, but then I looked at the thread header and realized I was two years old when these photos were taken…wow, does that make me “ancient” as well at age 57?

Hardly ancient, Young Man!

Thanks EL, I needed that today!

…Oh…really like the black and white photos of decades past of passenger railroading…! Even the side / yard tracks look good there at the Pelican. And I do believe that is a 1951 Hudson coming into the picture. Must be about brand new if photos were done in Fall of '50.

…And that sure does look like a “J” in the first photo’s background.

Pics were August 1952.

…Yes I note I read the origin date a bit incorrect…1952 Uncle Sam had me riding a train west for a longer journey.
