Static grass

Hi,

I’m looking for static grass in a colour that looks kind of like “Wild honey” OR “burnt grass” from Woodland scenics. But, if I have understood this correctly those fibres are only 2mm and I need something a bit taller, maybe some 4 and 6 mm fibers. Anyone knows if Walthers got any or any other sugestions. Since I plan to use a lot a bulk pack would be good. I’ve checked Scenic Express but haven’t found anything. But I might have missed something.

Magnus

You need to check out these folks! http://www.scenicexpress.com/

Yep. Scenic Express. 6mm and 6.5mm. They appear to have similar colors to what you want.

Made by Noch.

Thanks for the link. I’ve been checking that out before. My only problem is that they do not have any bulkpacks of that. That small amount will be expensive if used on large areas so I mostly search for some kind of bulkpack like they have of other kinds.

Once again, thanks.

Magnus

Something like this is what I want:

But how much is a cup in comparison to a Woodland Scenics shaker bottle?

From what I’ve seen it isn’t much but this cup measurement is not something I’m used to. Go metric! [swg]

Magnus

OK, I found how much a cup is. It isn’t very much!

Magnus

Scenic Express has mats of Silfor too: http://www.sceneryexpress.com/products.asp?dept=1054

I don’t remember where I got it, but I have a huge bottle of one of the colors. I thought it was from the scenic express web site. Big bottles existed a year ago. I wish I remembered where I got it.

They sure look nice but is hardly an option to use on an entire layout covering many many square meters of space. Just to expensive. That is why I need some form of bulk package.

Magnus

I would be delighted if you could tell me!

I checked and pcarrols link is what I used. I was after green colors and this worked.

Both WS & SE will make custom bulk packs to order for bulk prices. When I worked at Dunham Studios, we got 5 gallon bags of ground foam of different grades. Call them up and see what they’ll do for you.

For others who may not know - a cup is a touch less than 1/4 liter. 4 cups to a quart, 1.06 quarts to a liter.

That’s good to know. I e-mailed them last ´night asking about that. We will see what they answer. I did order a 20 gallon container of ground foam last week so hopefully static grass is also possible.

There are at least 3 suppliers of long static grass - Noch, Silflor and Heki. I notice you are in Sweden, I suspect you will find it much cheaper to buy these European sourced products in Europe. Lokshop in Germany carries a wide range and I have found them good to deal with.

Just how big is your layout?, I have found that a 75g pack will cover about 2 square metres.

My layout will be roughly 4*8 meters on two decks. I’ve checked the Swedish suppliers but I haven’t been able to find anything that I like online.

Unfortunelly sometimes(more often then not actually) the price is higher on a European product in Sweden then if I get it from the US. I ordered the Noch grasmaster from the US last week for 139$ and the in store price in Sweden is around 250$. I can find it for about 200$ online in Sweden. We have no compatition and the stores tend to set the same price on everything.

But I’m gonna check around. I won’t be sceniking anything for quite a while since I’m still building the train room(almost done) but I do like to my research ahead of time so that I know what to expect.

How many grams are there in the one cup containers? Not a lot I would guess? It says that it covers 12" by 12" which is not much.

I did find some decent static grass in a Swedish store. 100 grams for 16 dollars.

Speaking of the Noch Grassmaster, does anyone know how to construct their own static charge applicator? I’m sure I could fabricate one and I’m also sure it would cost far less than the Noch product, even at the best Internet price! Anyone willing to share how to build a static charge grass applicator?

Joe Fugate shows it in his video number five which I highly recommend. Unfortunately electronic goldmine didn’t ship to Sweden so I just bout the grass master instead. But it looks real easy to build, even for a chimp like me. Basically all you need is a PVC tube, a plastic cup, a aluminum net and then of course, the negative ion generator.

Magnus

That would be a helpful topic! I would like to know where I could get a negative ion generator to make one of these myself. Anyone? [;)]
