-super slow forums

does anyone know what is wrong with these forums it thanks anywhere from 20- 45 seconds to load a thread .and not to mention the dulications of postings. i think the guys at kalbach needs to check it out . it’s a mess just my two cents worth.

There are some features I used to regularly use that I no longer know how to do, like quoting an above post, but my experience has been that (except for late Sunday when the forum was down), my posts don’t take particularly long to get posted.

Duplicate posts can result by the writer hitting the “Post” button twice, after waiting for the first entry to take and assuming it didn’t.

I’m pretty sure you are having communications issues. I get pages in 3 or 4 seconds, even with all those pictures.

Al, I figured it out! To quote someone else’s post, click on the “Quote” rectangle at the bottom left–and it comes up on your post.

I, too, felt that the new format is much slower than the old in going where I want it to go, but thought that it might be my computer. What I post also is quickly accepted; are you and I different from other posters?

Many websites are running slow tonight. This is probably due to the election.

Have noticed no speed change either way.

Chico

More true than not.

If you are having a problem or have questions on how to do something on the forum, private message Bergie. It worked for me.

You might want to change your signature. With the new administration coming in, liking the smell of coal smoke might be a Hate Crime a year from now.

DITTO here.

My comments: Super slow tags it correctly for my performance on here now…and that’s with a cable modem. It is so difficult to move from screen to screen on the forum that I cringe to try to do as I did previously.

I am not saying I know the problem is with the new Trains.com format but on the other hand, I can move over to my email and process thru it rather well…etc…I’m just at a loss to understand what is causing this situation.

Edit: I note when changing screens on the forum…the status bar at the bottom of the screen displays a flash of “error on page” as it works to bring up next screen…and finally then, the next page appears.

Something else to keep in mind is that your data moves in many and varied paths between the servers that host the data (websites, etc) you desire and your computer. It’s not much different than a highway or railroad “network”. A tie-up in one location can affect traffic trying to pass through it, while all other traffic moves smoothly.

In Quentin’s case, his email is probably on a server located at or near his ISP’s main site. Getting to the TRAINs site may involve traversing the Chicago area, which may introduce delays.

If you’re a bit of a geek, you can bring up the CMD prompt on your computer and enter “tracert www.trains.com” It will take some time to get the entire trace, but you’ll see how many “hops” it took to get from your computer to the Trains server. Obviously “tracert” will work with any Internet site, so you can poke around a bit if you’re interested.

Larry…I appreciate your comments re: slow processing, etc…but my condition seemed to start as the “new system” was brought up for our use…I just don’t know if the problem is with this forum or my computer or along the cyber highway {or rail line}, ha…someplace. Sure would like to find out.

Hey Quentin -

How fast (in megahertz, or “MHZ”) is the CPU processor in your computer ?

What are you using for anti-virus/ firewall protection ?

I have much the same problem on my home computer (a 5 year old surplus one from work). An IT geek who was over to check it out this past Sunday evening - 'cause I’m surely not one - ran some tests, and pronounced it sound - just slow, at 488 MHZ. He called up the Task Manager’s “Performance” screen* - kind of looks like an EKG, green spiky lines on black & white background - which showed that it was running fine at 100 % of capacity for a good percentage of the time. Especially the 1st couple of minutes, while it loaded the new anti-virus, etc. software (AVG 8.0), and then whenever I accessed a new web page, esp. one with a lot of graphics or video that it had to process, review, and approve, before letting it through. As a quick test, he accessed www.msn.com, which had the same slow download.

Just a suggestion - maybe others here have better ones.

    • Edit - Here’s how to do it:
  1. Hit “[Ctr]l - [Alt] - [Delete]” - all 3 keys at the same time - a little pop-up menu screen labeled “Windows Secuurity” should then appear;

  2. Click on the [Task Manager] box in the bottom center of that screen;

  3. Another pop-up screen should then appear, titled "Wind

Paul…I’m not a very high qualified geek…to set the level here.

Thanks for your input on this subject.

Let me just enter a few stats:

System: Microsoft Windows XP…Service pack 2

HP Pavilion…Intel {R}…Celeron{2} CPU 260 GHz

260GHz 504 MB of RAM

MacAfee security…Recieves automatic updates

Haven’t tried to call up Task Master yet…{Thanks for info}.

Haven’t been having too many problems, but occasionally it takes a little while for a post to go through.

I participate in many forums, on a range of topics that are hosted by servers in a number of countries. The new form of the Tains Forum is the slowest of all those forums…and not by a little bit.

I also have slow service here on Trains.com, but I’m not concerned. There is another forum which I use which recently changed their format and it took about a month to get back back up to the old speeds. And I have a slow computer also, not to mention a slow intellect.

This is somewhat like the railroads changing from steam to diesel. Old equipment and habits did not disappear overnight.

hi guys i bought this computer 6 month’s ago it’s a3.1mg .and just had dell clean it out today and found it to clean and up to speed .the forums are still slow.i checked my other forums and for the most part they running to speed.

Would you compare the speed to a Rock Island branch line in 1979?
