Certainly something I have never seen!!! A great catch…nice pictures too!!! [:D]
I really didn’t know what to think of it. I have seen these in megazines but never in real life. It was quite a shock!!!
An ex- Norfolk and Western SD40 that CP bought, and converted into a B-unit…they are now owned by NREX…I have seen them around here in St. Louis before…alas painted grey.
I TOLD YOU IT WAS A B UNIT JAMES!!!
If you havent noticed, I was with James when we took pics of this loco.
It cannot be a lead unit because it only has a single beam headlgiht and no ditchlights.
I did not go against on that Max!! WTF are you yelling at me for!!! Try next time listening at what I say instead of yelling and flaming everyone!!
OK, first of all I did not disagree and second of all I should know since the ditch light were not present!
If you recall I did not say anything to you except that it was an unusual site there in Belknap yard. Try and rethink back if you can. Any locomotive without ditch lights (besides steam) cannot be the head locomotive on a train… thats a know brainer.
I don’t care what I say to you on “this” forum. It makes me mad when people put words in my mouth.
James…settle down. I did not flame you…but I did tell you it was a b unit and you did disagree. You cannot be this wild in the forums James. Calm down and watch what you type…
Had its sister unit, the 5480, down here in Houston last week on a BNSF grain train…they are not lead unit qualified…
NREX bought a bunch of these guys.

Um,hi. Not to interrupt, but I have seen similiar engines in the North Jersey area, usually a run through on one of the railroads here. Plus, lease units can be any place.
trainfan1221, These units CAN NOT lead because of two reasons…Blanked out cab windows and NO ditchlights…only units with ditchlights (and cab windows for obvious reasons) can lead trains…if one does lead…its a serious FRA violation…wich I have seen done before with a former conrail B40-8.
nice picture, i have never cared for high hoods, n&w had plenty of them
saw an sd 40 high nose on ns in edgerton ohio today.ns still has lots of them and gp 38s too
stay safe
Joe
bnsfkline,
I appreciate the info. What I meant was that they can appear any place if they are in a lease fleet. Around my area you see as many lease engines as regular ones for the railroads.
It does have windows.
Interesting loco. But i like the BNSF engines in the background better.
And all this time I thought a “B” unit was for booster I.E. no cab controls. Just because a unit is no longer FRA lead appropriate does not make it a “B” unit. It’s just another MUed loco not a “booster” Maybe I’m wrong? [D)] As always ENJOY [8D]
James, that really is a nice catch!! You don’t see many SD40-2 high hood units around. Actually, I’ll confess something here. I’'ve never heard of a high noise SD40-2 at all. I guess that must be because, I’m used seeing SD40-2 low nose units. hehehe I have heard of an SD40 high hood though.
IT’S EX SOUTHERN NOT NW. NW had high hood 45’s and 40’s not da***wo’s.

Ok…when these units were on CP…they had their windows blanked…NREX must have unblanked the windows after the purchase of these units…How do I know, you ask, I saw a picture of one when National Geographic did a story on the Canadian Pacific back in 1995, I forget which issue, but when I go back to my old babysitters, I will look for the issue. I though these units were ex N&W…my bad.
If I remember correct this and Ten others were purchased/leased by SOUTHERN in Jan. 1975 they were 3244-3254. Around 1995 the CP was purchasing used locomotives from other roads or lease companies. These units plus ones from KCS come to mind. I welcome more info from the forum.
