The Coffee Shop (a place to chat) Est. 2004

Late evening to all and Chloe before you go home I would like a hot tea on Flip’s tab and I think I will join him at his table

JP-I hope your mother doesn’t have to go in for surgery and if she does that it is the last resort. [angel][angel]

Yes I know but at the time it was the only question I had.

John

Nothing wrong with that,it was a good aircraft. [:)][tup]

Trent

Thank you very much and the best of luck on the test that you probably have taken by now.

Trolleyboy

That is the hard part to remember when it hits so close to home and you be sure to let us know the first thing when you find something out about the other position.

Thank You
Looks like we won’t be working on the bikes tommorrow because of the weather so I think I will join you in the basement and get some more benchwork done.
If I remember right,Ed said he was coming NOB for a couple of weeks and would try to check in when he could.

JimCG

Oh Oh[:D][:)][:-^]

Good evening gents…today was the last in a string of incredibly great weather. Tonight the showers arrived, the brush fires are out, and we have heavier rain due tomorrow and Sunday morning before clearing comes back. That means I finally get to work on the benches, and my wife’s PC which is making horrible noises. I am hoping it is just one of the two fans…if not, it means a new HD and moving off the files before it crahes in flames.

NOAH: Those pictures were just great, you did a banner job with your layout !!!

KEN: Thanks for sending the rain northward, we really need it to control the woodland fires, and also to give me a break from outside work which inturn gives me the chance to work on the benches.

DER JOHN: The “blue” parrot is DEAD? Ohhhhhhh Nooooooooooo!!![:(][:(][:(]

FERGIE UPDATE: Fergie is on the west side of Labrador in harbor. He has gained a convert on board to MRR’g. The ship electronic expert. He is going to talk to “his” CFO about getting started when they finally get back to port. Fergie had also hoped to get his garden going, but that will now be delayed until May sometime unless Lisa surprises Fergie and has the ground turned over for him…

CAPE JIM: I know that Ed tooka trip to Texas a few weeks ago, but he was back home. He had been having a lot of trouble with the DSL line dropping out, so I thought he might be sending smoke signals instead.

Well, this is about it for me, another back-breaking day outside, but I am nearly done with that sort of work. See you guys for breakfast…

Hi Gang;

Real quick tonight.

Nice pics Noah. It’s a good thing that you stayed around for abit. Those are nice shoots of the train and that odd caboose. I’ve got to teach Word to recognise " cabeese" as a correct word.

Trent, Good luck with the exams. Of course luck will have nothing to do with it.

Could someone send some rain down here. Even a Lanc’ load would be appreaciated.

Well that’s it for tonight .

Good Night All

Paul

G’day mates. Sorry Grubby. Stealing your line. Have a cuppa on my tab.
With my long days it seems I have missed a few newbies. So [#welcome][#welcome].
Please I.D. yourselves and a bit of who what and where. Me- I’m oldest Geezer and least accomplished modeler.
We are now inundated with BIKERS. Bikefest is on in Leesburg. [Fla.] Weather has been wonderful. This p.m. they are forcasting T-storms and rain. Just what the riders and venders don’t need
Thanks again for all the prayers and be assured you are all in ours. Deb seems to have a direct line to the processing department. Gets better results than me. I must have been a nasty kid. [nor to nice in my teens].
Jhh-Jim, can’t find that boxcar. Will have to move bunch of stuff to search other area. Should have been with other single RR cars but may be with major group. Or it has jumped track.
Ya’ll have a great day. And be safe out there.
Flip

Morning all’ just a quick hello before I run out the door. Busy sked today - need to go in and finish modding a trailer going to Road Atlanta Mon eve, then back here (home20) for a full day of chores and hopefully tomorrow some time on the layout and room.[:)]
TrentB - good luck on the exams - just remember to set the switches correctly this time.
CYAL,J.R.

Just wanted to stop by and thank everybody for thier prayers.

G’day cobbers, I’ll have a glass of Coke to wake me up thanks…large, plenty of ice.

Well, first things first some definitions are required for enquiring minds… IMHO= In my humble opinion, IMO = In my opinion, IIRC = If I recall correctly, GL HF = Good luck, Have fun…

Best wishes to everyone who needs a little divine assistance right now…

Another week on the DITM and more progress made…I received my 14 kits but unfortunately they arrived home before I did… Jack (my 6 year old offsider) saw the box, figured out what it was and laid them all out on my bed for all to see [:P] …so much for theFather/Son secret. The next day the last of the 5 Proto2k locos arrived, so much ducking for cover was achieved.

I hope no one notices the string of current purchases on ebay including the full 2001 MR issues including the special issues… probably will I guess but I’ll risk it…

I have now run out of track and work on the mainline has ground to a halt while we wait for another box to arrive. I have created some interesting opportunities[:P] with the track layout… evolving design has seen some radical changes on the fly…no mistakes, just opportunity created [:D]

With a long week end this weekend I hope to accomplish much much more… our deadline for running on the mainline is next Sunday, the day of the Brisbane Miniature Train Show. My Dad is coming by after the show for a look at the DITM and I really want to be able to run a train…all being equal it is achievable I think.

Well back to the assembly line… see you later in the weekend, hopefully with some new pics [:D]

Flip, you don’t by any chance have a cat on your premises, do you? Just thinking of another reason you might not be finding that boxcar… [:O] Or has Spooky been down south visiting?[;)]

Chloe, a large mocha and 2 eggs over easy (thanx Flip!)…

Happy Saturday morning all:

First, [#welcome] William North! Great bunch of people here, hope you can stay awhile.

Not exactly raining here in Md, but very wet and dreary-looking outside. No recent layout work to report on though. Thought I caught a fleeting glimpse of Ed yesterday, he posted a reply to a thread on the GD.

Noah –
Great looking pictures, dude! Keep ‘em coming. BTW, I finally figured out why you chose the [abbreviated] name of your pike…![D)][swg][(-D]

LilRob –

That stands for In My Humble Opinion.
I just found the perfect web site for people like us wanting to learn more about these online message abbreviations, and I’ll share it with you: It’s the NetLingo.com glossary at: http://www.netlingo.com/emailsh.cfm

JP –
About that washer – gosh it’s always something, huh? No rest for the weary, hope you get time to build the shelf layout soon…

JimCG –
It looks like you’re having a serious case of sticker shock…oh well, like all things painful, this too shall pass! But it’s still a worthwhile investment in terms of the time you’ll save on having those wall-and-window panels readily available instead of having to scratchbuild them (Walthers kits were made to be cut-up, remember).

Trolley Rob –
That’s a way-cool photo of that snowplow you sent to derJohn – certainly different from the ones I am used to seeing! BTW, did you ever visit the Streetcar Museum here in Baltimore? I haven’t been there myself lately, but that was a regular hangout for me during my teen years when they were still laying the track for it (half of my BSME friends were members there). It was right below the Chessie (B&O) main, which emerged f

Good morning Coffee Shop denizens! Zoe, could I have one of those danishes that Grubby brought in, an apple danish, with a cup of coffee, please? Thanks!

Grubby, I can definitely understand about those changes on the fly - after laying down roadbed last night (have 98 percent done, I’d say), I started looking at the space between two of the back ones, and realized I hadn’t left enough room for some structures I’ll be putting between them (unless they’re about the depth of a phone booth, at least!). So today I’ll have to take up a foot or maybe two of roadbed and re-lay that. I also started looking at the two backmost tracks I’d planned to have (industry siding and what I was going to have as the lead to a branch), and decided I’m not so sure I can fit both in with the industries I was going to put along the backdrop. So I’ll look and re-measure for building depths vs. space available and see if I really can fit a second track back in there. Like you said, changes on the fly. [:)]

Feels good to see structures on the layout and get a better (3D) idea of how things will look. Of course, then I get a bit impatient, and want to have everything done enough to run an engine and cars… [:-^]

Time to get moving - Zoe, I’ll see you and the crew later today!

Blessings on your (hopefully productive MRR’ing) day,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Hey guys, thanks for leaving me alone with Chloe. She just showed me her new tatoo.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
Seriously, Which RR bought out The Frisco? I may have put my singleton car with the major RR. I keep all cars in their boxes and grouped together by RR. Single rr cars are all in front together. [ hope thats clear]
Started out cool today but altho cloudy, warming nicely. There is a charity run for the bikers today of 130 miles. Hope the predicted t-storms stay away till very late.
Deb still stacking Zzzzzz’s.
Done with shopping and laundry. Coffee is hot. Hope your drinks are ready.
Best to all,
Flip

Good morning all—the usual, Chloe–Vienna Roast and Tuna Blintz for Spooky, here. She’s anxious for me to start putting in foam forms around the viaduct today so that I can plant all those trees she shredded for me. One thing at a time, cat! (Yah, suuuure, she’s listening!). I keep telling her that I have to go get some tunnel portals before I can start the scenery, she keeps telling me to get it in gear, man, time’s a-wasting. Hey, Bruce’s doesn’t open until ten, today—

Flip–BNSF bought out Frisco, your boxcar may be in that group. And no, Spooky hasn’t been down south lately (at least I haven’t seen any AMTRAK or airline ticket stubs running around loose, here). Besides, she’s strictly into cabeese. Look on the bright side–if it had been UP that bought out Frisco, your car might have been being held for ransom until you paid the ‘Fallen Flag’ usage fee. (Sorry, couldn’t let that one slip by.)

Steve: Looking at all that blue furnace filter material and all those bamboo shiskabob thingies I’ve got left (and will probably have left over, once the Tahoe National Forest is in) I just might have enough to send you a CARE package of fir trees, LOL! Actually, once you’ve got some spare time from the track and the family, try your hand at them, a-la-Aggro’s instructions. They’re fast, easy, fun and DANG, do they look good! This month’s MR has an article on some other ways to do tall timber–I might try some of those, too.

Siberianmo: I’m thinking of putting in the ‘diggings’ next week–on those ceiling tiles, do you cover the exposed broken edges with anything like Sculptamold or Hydrocal, or just paint them to look like rock? Just curious–mine are actually going to represent exposed Sierra clay formations, so I’ll have to color them in reds and yellows–going to take a drive up to Malakoff Diggings this Sunday if the weather holds and snap some photos. Give me a chance to get out of the Valley, anyway.

Paul: Just enter ‘cabeese’ i

Cat Tom- thanks for the tip. No,I don’t have a cat. They are too smug. My neighbor has three. They moved a mile away but the momma cat kept coming back so the renters are feeding it. The darn cat keeps killing the songbirds we feed. Even got a redheaded woodpecker. Going to look again for the frisco car.

Just stopped in to see what was going on while the garage is being heated so I can do some cutting for the benchwork. Yeah no bike riding for a couple days by the looks of it [:(][xx(]with rain and cold setting in again so I will join *** in the basement.

Talk to you later

Duke

Good afternoon gents…well the rain has arrived with vigor, and before it clears tomorrow noontime, we are expected to get an inch…seems doable seeing we have 0.31 inches already at noontime.

I had great intentions to get going on the benchwork this morning, but the wife’s computer had been making really ugly noises. I was fearful that the Hard Drive (HD) might be dying, and that would not be a good thing. After checking it out this morning, I found out that the power supply fan was the cause. Lots of dust on the fins and grid, but cleaning that off did not cure the problem…that meant only one thing…pull off the cover of the power supply and change the fan “if” I could find a replacement. I was lucky, it was a 3" fan, 12Vdc, 130ma, and Radio Shack carries universal replacements. The fan on the PC was a plug-in, so I needed to cut off the plug and splice the plug onto the wires of the new fan…now it is quiet as a mouse in January.

So now it is nearly 2pm and I haven’t even started on the benchwork yet. But 1st, I need to do a paper layout design to see what height I will use for tables, especially if I want to use a staging area under the benches. As we used to say at work in the olde days, PPPPPP , or P to the 6th, = Proper Planning Prevents P… Poor Performance!!

Time to get going, hope everyone is having a great Saturday,

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers

Just a quick note to say hello and to let you all know that things are well and that the trip has gone just fine so far. This is the first time I’ve had a chance to log in since we left home last Monday morning. Enjoyed three days up at the reunion of retired construction types from my old company. Currently spending the weekend in Cleveland, Texas, visiting daughter and son-in-law. We’ll be in Houston shopping (incl LHS) on Monday and Tuesday. Hope to be back home by Friday.

No time to catch up on reading, but did want to at least post this.

Best regards

Ed

Hola! Ed- glad things are going well for you . Good hunting at the hs.

Grubby- caught The Ghan on Tracks Ahead. Roo meat looks good.

Now showing a 20 year G scale layout. Wow.

Well the weather gurus were right. Rain started about 1 p.m. Wet bike riding. Hope they dont have any accidents

Now a Kentucky steam excursion train and museum. The “Flamingo” L&N pass.train.
Just something about the sound of a steam whistle that a diesel canNOT compare to.

Hi all

Well, has been quiet today - have been watching the entertainment of dad trying to plant as much as possible in the garden in between rain showers! Have also been attempting to fix an old Lionel boxcar I bought as a restoration project a while ago - the snag being that shortly after buying it I discovered that it’s not a good restoration project due to having a plastic shell and heat-printed lettering, so fixing the large hole the last owner knocked in the side could be tricky. Have found that CA glue can be used to restore broken roofwalk ends though, if you make a mould from blutack or similar then pour it in it takes the right shape and adheres to the remaining “stubs” on the car - they now look much better than they did when it arrived. It won’t be an A1 restoration but it will look reasonable from about 4ft in low light…

Jim, thanks for the luck, hope I get this lot - it’s been round twice already with no bidders, the seller’s dropped the price twice too - hopefully nobody else will be interested in it. There doesn’t seem to be a huge demand for Lionel over here so chances are good!

***, PC fans can be a real pain when they get old - one trick to extend the lifespan is to carefully peel back the sticker on the centre of the fan rotor and put a couple of drops of oil on the bearing underneath - can sometimes save a fan that’s noisy before it expires by doing this. I had a similar problem with an old AT power supply (new PSUs for old 386s are almost impossible to find) - blew the dust out, oiled the bearings, sorted the problem.

Well, my room is currently half-full of G scale at the moment - my brother has a friend staying and wanted it all cleared from the guest room. For some reason I still have 10 cars awaiting metal wheelsets despite buying several sets. I think it’s something to do with buying new stock before converting all the current fleet…

Bye for now

Looks like it’s my round again, what’re we drinking? Large coke with ice for me please!

Matt- for the sake of hands across the pond, I’ll try one of your pints, thankyou.
Good luck with the Lionel’s.
